I need to travel between Nakhon Si Thammarat and Kuala Lumper. Don't want to fly, I'd like to see a bit of Malaysia from the ground.

What border should I cross, and after doing so, what is a good way to travel with three pieces of medium-sized luggage?

I'd take the train from NST to Hat Yai and then get on the Butterworth train, going via the Padang Besar border. You could also train it over Sungai Kolok in the southeast but you need to go through Narathiwat and it's also a bit out the way. if you have time from Butterworth, hop across to Penang and then perhaps bus it from there to the Cameron Highlands before bussing it onto KL. If no time, you can simply change trains in Butterworth and run onto KL.

Thanks.

I can make time, but JAL allows two check-ons and I'm taking some heavy stuff back to the States, so dragging it around could be, well, a drag.

Penang (state) would, however be of interest, I'd like to sample the foods.

So, I cross at Padang Besar, how do I get from there to Butterworth (train station)? I assume Butterworth has a good representation of typical Penang hawker foods? I don't want to go out of the way into Georgetown.
