First ever Chiang Mai Chinatown Thailand festival in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- The northern province of Chiang Mai is scheduled to host its first event to specifically promote tourism among Chinese visitors with the launch of China Town festival in the city.

Mr Montree Piyakul, director of the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Tourism, said that the two-day Chiang Mai Chinatown Thailand festival has been scheduled during October 17 and 18 at the Tha Phae Gate in the city center.

He said that statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports showed as many as 2.8 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2013, a 60% increase from the previous record.

For 2014, it is expected that more than 3.3 million Chinese visitors will have descended in the country, he added.

He went on to say that the 2014 Chiang Mai Chinatown Thailand has been planned to attract more Chinese tourists to the city in order to help revive and boost domestic economy which has earlier been shaken by the months of political unrest.

He said that visitors to the 2-day event will be able to enjoy an exhibition to illustrate Thailand-China relations, various Thai-Chinese cultural performances, Thai-Chinese food shops and the Miss Chiang Mai-China 2014 Pageant.

Hmmm. held at Tha Pae gate? for some odd reason I thought they would have it in China town. Maybe the message is that all CM is now chinatown?

While it'd be nice to see, can't help thinking Thailand could promote other cultures more often, to both honour their visitors a bit and to reciprocate. For instance, there are all sorts of Thai-centric events held in countries around the world, but nary a sliver of reciprocation here. I guess a lot of it comes down to the general populace not being very worldly or caring much for anyone else, but still...

Yes the Chinese tourist will love a event about Chinese culture, that is why they traveled to Thailand for sure!

Excellent way to show the cities powers that be's understanding of why people travel to Chiang Mai .

Maybe a free motorbike driving school, would be a better draw for the Chinese tourists here since they seem to love to try to learn how to drive a motorbike while in Chiang Mai.

Is there a schedule of events with times?

Sounds like fun but why or why isn't it a World event?

Oh great! Just what we don't need in Chiang Mai…more Chinese!!facepalm.gif

What wrong turn led you to Thailand?

Good way for the Chinese to network with the locals and possibly pick up a few cute girls as their number 2 or 3 wife...watch your step please...

Great. Just announced? Certainly gives potential tourists a lot of advanced notice to make their plans.

It's not a bad idea but still gets all the usual and pathetic thaivisa neg.

We have some Chinese tourists and should welcome a lot more.

They are the medium term future for the Thai tourist industry.

Assess the number of cars around with Chinese reg. plates.

Look at the types of car being driven.

Then look at the $ they represent.

Events like this start small but can grow.

re
