BANGKOK: -- A 19-year-old man was killed and four others hurt in a brawl at a rock concert in Pathum Thani's Klong Luang district yesterday, police said.

Sarawut Jit-o-larn instantly died from three stab wounds while his four friends, aged 17 to 19, were hurt.

The teenagers were attacked at around 12.30am at the Paradox concert on a field near the site of an August condominium collapse, said Captain Thawatchai Dech-upakan of Khlong 5 Police Station.

Tawan Lek-kla, 18, told police that his group had an argument at the concert with another group of teenagers whom they had never met before.

Tawan, who was slashed on the ankle, said the argument quickly turned violent, with the other group attacking them with knives before fleeing.

Police later announced the arrest of three suspects, aged 17 to 22, along with the seizure of three knives.

Khlong 5 Police Station deputy superintendent Lt-Colonel Krissadaporn Panprong said the concert's organisers had asked for police permission to stage the event and 50 officers were stationed there.

He insisted that police searched concert-goers but some teens were still able to smuggle knives into the venue.

Unfortunately this is nothing new.

About 15 years ago when working at a rural uni a Carabao Concert came to the municipality and some of my students planned to go.

I was asked if I would like to go with them and since they were my favourite students I didn't want to say No but I did hiding behind excuses like having a low pain threshold so the noise would do me in, not being a night owl etc. Luckily they accepted, laughed at me and no one lost face.

The day after the concert I asked how it went and the terror on the faces of a couple of the girls' faces was still there. All of them left the concert early feeling that trouble was brewing which it had been and resulted in a youth being stabbed to death.

I don't know who the performers were, but please don't class it as 'Rock' as it was probably nothing of the sort.

Still how sad....

Priorities, lamentable Thai pop, followed by growing problem with gang violence.sweet.

This stuff happens all the time at rural concerts. I've seen police shoot in the air to break up a fight. It's an Asian thing I think. If you watch movies from HK or Taiwan, there always big group fights with blades and bats.

I still can't believe they actually stationed 50 police officers at a rock festival, I wonder how much the concert organizers had to pay for that?

At least they captured the suspects quickly, reading stories like this makes me worry about my 11 year old starting to go out with friends to things like this with his mates in a few years.

"He insisted that police searched concert-goers but some teens were still able to smuggle knives into the venue."

So clearly they weren't all searched then.

Well if its anything like the search going onto the MRT or into any shopping mall I doubt they would pick up anything.

just goes to show you how fast the smiles turn to slashes

it isn't just Thailand,

no place is safe anymore

Don't be embarrassed to say it.... it could only happen in the land of smiles 50 police? and a teenager gets stabbed what kind of upbringing are they getting from home... this is the future mafia and I can never see Thailand as a safe place in the future Thailand is gone to sh#%.

This is not a Thailand thing.

I got stabbed myself in my country (Montreal, Canada) outside a nightclub after asking a group of 3 guys if they knew where the subway was...

This is a major problem worldwide: people drink and start acting arrogant and always look for trouble.

But it is an Asian thing...

Something happened to you in our home country... One event..

Here, it seems to be the prevalent MO when opinions diverge amongst teens...

And I do remember the start of knife wounds in Ottawa back then, when asian immigrants arrived... Before that, it was just about unheard of...

c'mon people,

this is not a Thai specific occurance

we all know, this happens everywhere, and in many cases, starts when a girl snubs a guy, or an ex girlfriend is with a new guy

I walked out of a concert in one of the calmest places on earth, in northern california, or, at least so I thought, when out of nowhere, one guy was calling another guy out, using the usual female dog profanity, and then when the guy didnt want to fight, the antagonist pulled a gun, and fired in the air,

they couldnt have been more than 20

those are mainly gangsters, in Thailand you see people getting shot more often because its easy to get a gun.

Like the Hippie Love & Peace era is gone forever which I was fortunate to experience, and still lives on in my memory!

Do you think people aren't able to smuggle weapons, bottles of booze, drugs and whatever into concerts, anywhere?

You must be joking.
