Pattaya outlines measures to upgrade tourist safety

PATTAYA:--Local government officials and police met with hotel operators and business owners to outline ways Pattaya is trying to make the area safer for tourists.

Banglamung District Chief Sakchai Taengho chaired the “Improve the Intensity of Local Tourism Safety” forum Oct. 13. The event was organized following the Sept. 15 murder of two British backpackers in Koh Tao to re-evaluate safety measures for tourists.

Following the killings, Chonburi Gov. Khomsan Ekachai ordered security improved in the province to ensure a Koh Tao-like tragedy doesn’t occur here. Among the changes outlined to business operators were: increased patrols, more police checkpoints, meetings between public officials and private-business operators, and adding lighting and CCTV cameras to high-risk areas.

Oh we all know this trick. It's called "Seen to be Doing Something" as opposed do actually doing something effective.

It's the beginnings of the old Irish-type jokes: How many meetings does it take for a Thai policeman to catch a ladyboy bag snatcher? Best funny answer gets a prize:p

100% correct

Never seen a place like pattaya for officials having meetings creating action plans and then doing absolutely nothing

and most likely spent the budget on ..........something

I've got to agree.

Talk is cheaper nowhere than it is here is Thailand.

I do not understand so many negative comments...

I have spent 38 winters in Pattaya without any problems of any kind...

Some parts of Europe are much less safe!

to their credit and my amazement, last 4-5 I have seen police walking up and down Jomtien Beach Road in the morning. Had nice chat with them. I haven't checked at night. But hey, that can be dangerous.

Thailand has been a popular Tourist country for how long , 25, 30 years ? , so why is taking care of tourists security treated as if its some kind of modern phenomena that they have previously not experienced. They give a shit now because they are on their knees economically

Is this a joke? No cops visible on walking street, you'll have to walk a couple kilometers to soi 9 to find one. You are on your own. Good luck..cheesy.gif

CCTV cameras have never stopped armed theft in the mini marts, neither has lighting ever stopped violent brawls or gun fights that end in casualties and deaths.

Check points have never eliminated drunk reckless drivers from the roads, nor has meetings with officials and private businesses solved any of these problems.

So now we have shaved the head off the top of the ale, that leaves more police patrols.

I can't comment about patrols...as I've never noticed one before, maybe that is the solution to all of this.

Stop as many tourists driving a bike as possible, fine them for no helmet, license and insurance and crime will vanish overnight.

I think they are on to a winner, so much so that I'm debating buying a bar, there will be so many tourists there soon that people will have problems finding a bar or restaurant with seats available.

Obvious solution to the crime problem in Pattaya...every tourist or group of tourists will have a personal police escort...second best solution...put all tourist in roped off areas...like animals at a zoo...so the police can watch over them...thirdly... place all lady boys and mafia hoodlums in jail so the tourists can move about Pattaya unmolested...

Are you being sarcastic, or have you never been to Pattaya?

There is a strong Tourist Police presence at the entrance to Walking Street every night, both Farang volunteers and Thais. There is a table set up with an officer in charge to take statements and register complaints where necessary. There is usually a regular police presence, from Soi 9, further along, near Nang Nual restaurant; and patrols are also made along the length of the street using a rather comical electric car contraption.

Whatever its other drawbacks, Walking Street is not lacking a police presence.

I read all these polite sarcastic comments and think "Bang-On".

If this was happening in the "West" I'd think they're taking the mickey. But it's happening here, in Pattaya.

How exactly does a "Thai-Brain" work and think ??

While I agree with you observations, Europe is a long way from Pattaya. When one is living in Pattaya, one is concerned with the conditions here and not elsewheres.

Just give us all wristbands as suggested by the minister of tourism. That will solve all the problems, much easier to identify us when we die.

Not the same measures as I thought...

Ban watersports

Ban ladyboys

Ban Esan ladies of the night.

Safety would follow...

Ban the ladies and it would be a ghost town.

Look at what they do not what they say. If they were truthfully concerned with protecting tourist they would have performed the simplistic task of ending the Jet Ski scams. Pattaya Jet Ski scams are viewed worldwide over YouTube continually hurting the image of Pattaya and Thailand's tourism and its happening virtually across the street from their main police station. Obviously they place a higher value on the bribe money they get each month from the scum they permit to run the scam on Pattaya's unsuspecting tourists.

These guys have utterly and completely no credibility. They are merely a group of extortionist with government powers; they prove by there actions they are not interested in protecting Pattaya tourist, they’re interest is not in protecting tourist but extracting money from them.
