Where are you? Usually they either take them to a charity dog drive - or more often - just release them somewhere else. However, they keep closing down dog meat suppliers.

There are government-run dog pounds. However, the conditions in them are atrocious. Dogs from Bangkok I believe tend to be sent up country to relieve overcrowding.

Occasionally, when the pounds are totally overwhelmed (such as during the 2011 floods), dogs will be taken from the pounds and released into the forest where they die of starvation.

There are also a number of privately run and charitable dog pounds such as the Soi Dog Foundation and Head Rock Dog Foundation.

There's also a Facebook group of people who identify soi dogs which can be adopted, and then people apply to adopt them and, if accepted, take the dog directly from the street. That's how I got my latest puppy. Competition was surprisingly (and gratifyingly) fierce. It was the third dog I applied to adopt. Others got to the first two before me. The group is at https://www.facebook.com/ThailandPetRescue (Thai language only.)

It's very much against Buddhist philosophy to put dogs down. Indeed, it's very difficult to find a vet willing to do so, however desperate the dog's condition.

The problem I have is not with soi dogs but those owned by house owners on our estate. Our Juristic entity is strict on dogs off leads so we don't get any (much) dog crap everywhere. What we do get is noise!

Why do dog owners go deaf when they get a dog? Why should they be allowed to inflict their dogs' hysterical, neurotic noise on non-dog owners? I am unfortunate enough to live on Dog Corner as this venue is popularly known. There is a great Dane owned by selfish Germans who allow its booming bark to go off at all hours. This may or may not set off two yappers living opposite but then a breath of wind can also set them off.

Many people retire here for peace and quiet after a life-time of working in noisy surroundings. They choose to live in quiet neighbourhoods to live out their days peacefully, often paying a premium for this dream which is then shattered by the arrival of these selfish, thoughtless owners.
