The Exploited Kids Selling Roses to Tourists On Khaosan Road

By Sally Mairs

Bangkok's Khaosan Road is the not the kind of place you want to take your kids. The strip of neon-lit bars and nightclubs, budget hostels, and 24-hour Burger Kings is what happens when generations of tourists remake a street in their own image; it's nickname is the “center of the backpacker universe.” Young Westerners flock to Khaosan to drink from plastic buckets of alcohol, inhale greasy piles of 2 AM pad thai, and deck themselves out in elephant-print pants, all to the beat of the pop music that blasts from every available speaker.

Egg prices of all sizes to go up 20 satang from Monday

25-10-2557-15-17-22-wpcf_728x402.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Beginning Monday October 27, ex-farm prices of mixed sizes of eggs will go up 20 satang after the Chicken Raisers Association announced to raise ex-farm price to reflect actual cost.

Association president Annop Akkharanithiyanon said the increase will make ex-farm prices of mixed sizes of eggs from 2.60 baht to 2.80 baht.

He said chicken raisers have been selling eggs below cost prices since the vegetarian festival in September.

As now demand for eggs is increasing due to the coming tourism season when rising orders are coming from hotels and restaurants, it was necessary for raisers to raise the ex-farm prices of mixed sizes of eggs by 20 satang.

He said the increase, which was agreed upon during a meeting of the association on Wednesday, would reflect the market demand and cost of the chicken raisers.

Meanwhile Central Region Chicken Raisers Association president Chaiyaporn Sithan said ex-farm prices of eggs are currently below cost which comprises high labour cost and animal feed prices.

If there was no price increase, small raising farms could hardly survive.

He said the 20 satang increase is still below the ceiling which the National Chicken and Chicken Product Development Board or commonly known as “egg board” allows at no more than 3 – 3.50 baht.

He said that the ex-farm price increase will raise prices of Size 0 egg to 3.20 baht, Size 1 egg to 3.10 baht, Size 2 egg to 3 baht, and Size 3 egg to 2.90 baht.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located southeast of Ban Nam Chang, Khun Nan Subdistrict, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Nan province. Mr. Somsak confirmed the vibration was felt only in Laos and the earthquake had no impact on the fault line straddling Mae Lao, Mae Suai and Phan districts in the Thai northern province of Chiang Rai which adjoins the Lao Border. The fault line was hit by an earthquake on 5 May 2014.

The NDWC director also urged people in the northern region to take care of their health during this winter by preparing warm clothes and blankets because the temperatures should drop continuously and the cold would last until February 2015.

As for the southern region, the director warned those living on hillfoots or by river banks along the southern coasts to closely monitor weather forecasts from the Meteorological Department as the region is now in the monsoon season.
