BANGKOK: -- The Legal Execution Department has recently offered to help mediate the debts owed to the Student Loan for Education Fund by hundreds of thousands who took loans from the Fund and have failed to honour the repayments obligation.

Ms Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, director of the Legal Execution Department, disclosed over the weekend that she recently wrote to the Fund manager offering help. She said that if the debts could be mediated, many debtors to the Fund would be spared the specter that they might have their properties seized and the Fund itself would be spared the trouble of going through the lengthy court process.

The Fund has reportedly filed 500,000 lawsuits against students who have failed to repay their loans but so far the Fund has not asked the Legal Execution Department to seize their properties or assets.

Ms Ruenvadee said that the department had a policy to mediate legal conflicts not just among students but also to members of the public for the benefits of the conflicting parties. Of late, the department cooperated with financial institutions, car leasing companies and credit card companies to hold an exhibition aimed at mediating the debts owed to these companies by their debtors.

For the 2014 fiscal year, the Legal Execution Department has successfully mediated 4,699 out 5,715 cases with a total value of 2.204 million baht in debts being settled.

In cooperation with Toyota Leasing Company, the department will help mediate the debts between car buyers and the company between October 27-28 at its office in Ratchaburi.

Another brilliant move considering the students have no intention of paying back the loans. As for seizing property or assets. if there are none to seize (put everything in some other family member's name), the only thing the department is left holding are their...ugh...whistling.gif

Could it be the graduates found that what they had been sold was not worth the paper it was printed on?

The ones who didn't need loans are very happy with their career prospects...
