Flood-precaution flags put up around Hat Yai as monsoon season begins

SONGKHLA, 29 October 2014 (NNT) – Hat Yai Municipality has set up flood-precaution flags and labels at 21 points around bridges across U-tapao Canal, Rama I Canal, and other tributaries inside and outside the city.

The flags and placards are seen particularly in four main communities and economic zones of Hat Yai. They are designed to warn residents of possible floods during October to December which is a monsoon period usually causing heavy rain and run-off.

There are three levels of precaution by the flags. Green flag is the sign of normal situation. Yellow flag designates the water level of just 1.5 meters below the bank and close monitoring is needed. Red flag shows there will be flooding within the next 6-30 hours and people are strongly recommended to lift all their belongings to an upper level. Lastly, Red flag with siren means flash flood will occur within next 3-6 hours and people must move to safe places immediately.

Apart from the precaution flags, Hat Yai Municipality also set up Hat Yai Flood Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centre in a contingency plan to cope with upcoming flooding. In the meantime, the municipality has been constructing reinforcements to strengthen the existing embankments in communities locating along U-Tapao and Khlong Wah Canals which experience erosion of river banks every year. People who are affected by the flooding are urged to call Hotline 1559 around the clock.
