BANGKOK: -- Only 10 percent of the 18 million tonnes of rice in stockpiles since June are of good quality and in good condition, 70 percent of them are of poor quality with the grains turn yellowish and the rest 20 percent have become rotten and inedible, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha on Tuesday.

Bangkok City Hall banning fireworks during Loi Krathong

BANGKOK, 29 October 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is banning the sale and lighting of flying lanterns near tall buildings, historic sites, palaces, major temples and airports during the Loi Krathong Festival.


Wanlop Suwannadi, chief adviser to the Bangkok governor, explained that in addition to flying lanterns, fireworks will also be banned from sites where Loi Krathong festivities will be hosted by City Hall. These sites include many public parks in the capital city, and the vicinity of Rama VIII Bridge.

According to the BMA, only six fireworks sellers in Bangkok have been authorized to sell their products. BMA officials will be monitoring against unauthorized sellers during the Loi Krathong period.

City Hall law enforcement officials will also be stationed at all piers along the Chao Phraya River on the night of Loi Krathong to maintain safety. Medical personnel will also be deployed at various sites, Mr. Wanlop added.

20 shops at Rong Klua market in Sa Kaeo burnt down

BANGKOK: -- A massive fire raged through 20 shops of winter clothes at the Rong Klua Market in Sa Kaeo province at 10 pm Tuesday.


Thirty fire engines took about one and a half hours to control the blaze that caused damage worth more than Bt10 million.

No casualties were reported and the authorities have yet to establish the cause of the fire.

Public support pours to 10-year-old girl who takes care of terminally ill mother

A ten-year-old girl was left to take care of her terminally ill mother alone at the Buri Ram Hospital. The girl, Sawinee Khongkhan, had to skip classes to watch her mother at her dying bed at the hospital for over a month.

The mother, Somsri, said her other children left her.

Doctors, nurses and other people, who learned of the story, came to visit the mother and the girl and offered some help.

PM to visit Cambodia tomorrow

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will make an official visit to Cambodia tomorrow on a two-day visit to strengthen relations of the two countries.

The official visit during Oct 30-31 will be his second official visit to ASEAN after his visit to Myanmar on Oct 9-10.

The prime minister will leave Don Meuang military airport on at 1.45 pm Thursday and return on Friday at 3.45 pm.

On his first day, he will pay a courtesy call on Cambodian Premier Hun Sen, and to witness the signing of three memorandums of understanding on cooperation in suppression of human trafficking, rail links between the two countries, and tourism.

He will have an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, the prime minister will visit the Royal Palace and Asean Economic Community (AEC) Business Support Centre and has lunch with Thai businessmen in Cambodia before returning to Thailand Friday.

Some 10,000 birds from Siberia take refuge in Trang

TRANG: -- Some 10,000 birds which escaped winter in Siberia have taken refuge in the Libong Islands in Trang, Chaipruek Wirawong, the chief of Libong Islands Wildlife Sanctuary said Wednesday.


He said the number of birds from Siberia is expected to rise to some 40,000. He said about 40,000 birds of 44 species from Siberia visited the islands each year.
