Don't think we have a ref's thread do we?

Referee Mark Clattenburg dropped from weekend list after breaching protocols

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg will miss next weekend’s round of fixtures for breaking protocol so he could watch an Ed Sheeran concert.

Clattenburg travelled in his own car to officiate the West Bromwich vs Crystal Palace match in order to get back to Newcastle in time to see the award-winning singer-songwriter perform at the Metro Radio Arena last Saturday.

Premier League regulations require the referee and his assistants to travel together to and from games for integrity and security purposes.

Mike Riley's a bit of a knob as are a number of the rules regarding his referees. The Clattenburg situation seems a total farce.

dunno, clattenburg knows the rules so why break them so blatantly? and why would he be on the phone to palace boss colin?

Actually, yes the must have to have been a very special reason why he'd be on the phone to a manager. Then again, its only Colin!

I didn't know all four officials even lived in the same town. And how can all travelling together increase security? Us normal mortals are obviously living in the wrong universe.

Michael Oliver, the youngest Prem referee when admitted in 2010 has been appointed to the Manchester Derby on Sunday.

Well done to him - hit the big time early. His penalty award against Shawcross a couple of weeks back for grappling an attacker in the box as a free kick was about to be taken was a seminal moment in Prem reffiing - presumably must have been taken as a positive by Riley/Webb.

These are the type of rules that the FA loves enforcing because they are silly, antiquated and don't require any sense of judgement.

The protocol is that all officials meet at a local hotel and travel from there to and from the game. According to Graham (Referee's Oracle) Poll, it started back in the late 90's after he was attacked by 'boro fans after a game against Arsenal. Apparently in Clattenburg's case, the designated hotel was about 4 miles from the ground.

sounds reasonable enough on the face of that, but you would think that the fa would judge one of the adults to be capable of making a decent judgment call on the likelyhood of a situation arising pretty soon after the match. and would allow or not allow officials to then go their own way post match. perhaps they felt threatned, somehow.i doubt , perhaps.if the fa came out with a clearer explanation and a decent resolution to avoid such aridiculous sounding situation again than fair enuf, but as per norm just another poorly.judged ,managed, situation imo making them selves look ridiculous.

So meeting in and going back to the same hotel is good security is it? I'm no cop but on the face of it .... cheesy.gif

i suspect the train of thought there was safety in numbers leaving grounds, which given all, aint a terrible train of thought, but punish someone for not adhearing to it,, we'll everyone to their own , but you trust them to officiate for 90 mins then not 2 judge if its safe to leave a ground by themselves. really,,,,
