The head of one of Cambodia’s major teachers’ unions will lead a group of students near the Vietnamese border to inspect border markers which Cambodian nationalists frequently claim are moved by Vietnam to enlarge its territory.

Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association, is undertaking the expedition as a member of the Norway-based Cambodia Watchdog Council.

Chhun said he would travel to Svay Rieng and other border provinces on November 16, taking students to “see the truth of the border between Vietnam and Cambodia”.

Up to 100 students have shown interest, Chhun said.

Chhun was placed on judicial supervision and banned from joining public gatherings by the capital’s court on Friday due to his alleged involvement in violent protests in December and January.

“I don’t care about the court restricting my freedom,” he said.
