Last month i went to get a non Im o multi entry i year visa in Vientiane Lao but ended up with a single entry 90 day one instead. The woman at the desk assured me i could upgrade this to a year visa by going to immigration. What are the requirements for this visa and will i be able to get it at Chaeng Wattana without leaving the country?

I have previously got one year multiple entry o visas from Yangon and London, but Lao would not give me the visa even though i had the correct paperwork.

You would a apply for a one year extensions of stay (it is not a visa) based upon marriage or retirement. There are different financial requirements for them.

Upon what basis have you getting the multiple entry non-o visas? If marriage you could of gotten one in Savannakhet.

My partner has a work permit and while we're not married, i'm the primary carer for our child so with a combination of paperwork from her employer, and our daughters birth certificate etc, i've always got the visa i needed, though i've had to do 90 day border runs. This time i've only got a 90 day single entry for some reason, though i was told i could upgrade it to a year.

You will not get a visa at any nearby location on that basis. You also will not be able to get an extension of stay at immigration.

If your child is attending school and has an extension of stay for that you could get one as their parent. You would need 500k baht in a Thai bank account for 30 days for the first extension.

Vientane does not issue multi-entry non-imm. visa. Go to Savannkhet for that.

Savannakhet would not of issued one either for the reason he was using to get it.

Right, suppose the OP is just over 50. Interesting London and Yangon issued multi-entry.

As ubonjoe said, the OP is not any of these cases. if over 50 can only do a retirement extension with the usual financial requirements. If under 50, no extension appears available to him unless he marries.

You snipped out the one he qualifies for.

I see, he's the father of a child that has an extension of stay.

Hope that for Thai immigration a birth certificate will be enough, as in case of a Thai child born out of wedlock that would not be the case. Maybe OP has additional documents in that regard.

That do not impose the same rules for non Thai children as they do for getting an extension as the parent of a Thai.

So i need to put 10k Sterling in my bank for a month prior to going to immigration?

Close to the exact number at today's exchange rate is 9,722 pounds to get 500k baht in the bank that needs to be there for 30 days to apply for the extension.

Thanks for the swift reply Joe.

The fees for the UK side of the SWIFT transfer would depend upon the bank you are sending it from there.

Here it is typically .25% (200 min to a max of 500 baht) that is deducted form the transfer coming in.

If you have a Bangkok Bank account you can transfer it in for a lower cost via their London branch. http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/DailyBanking/TransferingFunds/TransferringIntoThailand/ReceivingFundsfromUK/Pages/ReceivingFundsfromUK.aspx

Thanks for the info Joe. Just in the process of transferring now. Do you know if it's ok to keep the money in Sterling, or whether i have to change to Baht?

You could keep is as sterling if you set up a foreign currency account.

Immigration accepts those for other types of extensions. There is no rule that say it has be in a baht. But you might find some immigration offices that would not accept it.
