SUKHOTHAI, Nov 3 -- Thailand's annual Loy Kratong Festival for 2014 has begun in many provinces across the country, ahead of the full moon day of the 12th Lunar month, which falls on Thursday November 6 this year.

The Loy Kratong and Candle Festival in Sukhothai province kicked off last night, crowded with tourists enjoying the annual festivities. Sukhothai is known as the site of the origin of the Loy Kratong festival, prompting throngs of revelers to converge on the Maha That Historical Temple to watch the sound and light show.

Visitors can enjoy the actual Loy Kratong festival on November 6, during which all kratongs belonging to the Royal Family will be floated and walk through a themed atmosphere dating back some 700 years ago, into the olden days of historic Sukhothai.

In Chiang Mai province, festival goers, particularly the older persons, attended an alms-giving ceremony at Wat Jet Lin temple to continue the Yee Pen tradition during Loy Kratong. Devout Buddhists listened to sermons afterward and prayed to the sacred beings within the temple.

The Beung Karn Provincial Administrative Office in Isan region, led civil servants and others to clear out weeds and clean up the waterways.

The activity is aimed to revive the scenery of the province's public pond, as preparation of the upcoming Loy Kratong on November 6. (MCOT online news)

Me and the Misses taking our first ever Loy Kratong Boat trip on the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok. The program for the night sounds awesome.

I looking forward to it thought I really never care much for Loy Kratong but this year I am into it full force ^^

A bit pricy but what the hell. thumbsup.gif

Today at Kad Suan Kaew (Chiang Mai) I saw that a bakery had made a lot of baked krathongs. I didn't know what they were at first. I read somewhere recently that these are better for the river environment than the ones made from plant material. Maybe this is true, but can someone explain why?

Friends who've gone on those Chao Phraya River cruises have enjoyed them. There are good ones on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. I would think this would be good. Money wants to be spent.

I think it's because the plant material rotting in the water can be smelly and blacken the water. The bread-based krathongs dissolve into small pieces fairly quickly and will be eaten by small fish and water insects. If you're talking about a river it probably doesn't matter, but if it's a pond in a public park it probably does.
