Some parts of Thailand still experiencing water shortages

BANGKOK, 4 November 2014 (NNT)-Many areas in Thailand are still experiencing water shortage problems thanks to insufficient rainfalls lowering the water levels in reservoirs.

In Nakorn Phanom, the amount of water in the storage is down to only 70% of its total capacity in Nawa district. Residents could be at risks of water shortage as there is no comprehensive irrigation system in place to supply the water.

The authorities and residents have held a meeting to find ways to mitigate the impact when drought season arrives. In the northern province of Angthong, some farmers have been affected by the Royal Irrigation Department’s policy not to release water to farm areas.

Many of them have lost their incomes as they can’t grow crops. The local irrigation office plans to hire these farmers to dredge canals as a way for them to supplement their incomes and at the same time create more water storage areas to help retain enough water for farming in the summer.

Consumers warned of fake seaweed

BANGKOK, 4 Nov, 2014 (NNT) - Health officials and online informants have warned consumers to be more careful when buying or eating sea food following reports of fake seaweed.

According to online sources, the fake seaweed, which was discovered at a fresh market at Rangsit area, looks similar to real seaweed but was much tougher because it was made from plastic. The products were imported from China.

Health officials, meanwhile, disclosed that fake seaweed had hit some outlets in Mae Hong Sorn province. Inspections found that the fake seaweed was not certified by the country’s Food and Drug Administration. Its packages show neither the addresses of the producer nor the importer.

Authorities have now imposed a ban on the products. Stores selling the products have been ordered to immediately take them off the shelves.

Farmers told to increase value of their products to raise incomes

BANGKOK, 4 October 2014 (NNT) – The Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives said deforestation will no longer exist if there are enough water sources for farmers.

Minister of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives Pitipong Puengboon Na Ayudhaya said it is imperative for the Royal Irrigation, Land Development, and Agricultural Extension departments to improve the quality of soil and assure an adequate supply of water for farmers.

A team of academics is also needed in areas where farming is predominant. Farmers should be educated about how to improve the soil quality and the law against forest encroachment.

The Minister added that they should also learn to grow crops that require less water and apply the Sufficiency Economy philosophy in their lives. They need to continue to improve the quality of produce in order to fetch higher prices, and help raise their incomes.
