Garmin GPS shop

Featured Replies

Hey everyone!d Has anyone bought a Garmin from the kiosks in the malls? Theres a guy here in Central Cheang that has a little booth set up. I have to get a GPS but wasn't sure if these booths are real or did everyone get theirs from overseas? For my work, I have to go to all the hospitals and government buildings around Thailand and the GPS on my Note4 is horrible.

Bought mine from the Garmin shop in fortune. Helpful guy, set it up in English for me so it was just plug it in and away we go

not exactly a direct answer to your question i believe garmin is a well supported system in Thailand

i purchased a Papago Z1 a while back from lazada it certainly has a very comprehensive P O I library

and seems to list all hospitals / government departments in my area i can only think it will be just as comprehensive for the rest of Thailand

plenty of back up from H Q Malaysia once you register your product

The last thing I would do would be to buy a Garmin if I already had a new Samsung phone. What aspect of the Note 4 GPS is "horrible"? Is is the GPS hardware/signal/antenna configuration or is it the software you use - of which there is a plethora of options to choose and install, unlike on a Garmin where you are stuck with what comes on the unit.

For turn by turn directions, my cheapo Garmin Nuvi40 (from GPS4U in Fortune Tower) is great. Last weekend the Nuvi 40 was on sale at QSNCC trade show for 2500 baht. It's been replaced by the Nuvi 55 (maybe 50?) for 4,990.

For walking around, I like my Samsung with Google Maps, or MapFactor Navigator (free version).

Best thing for me is to look up exactly where I want to go on Google Earth on my laptop, then program coordinates into the Garmin.

If you do buy a Garmin, make sure they program it for English before you leave the shop (assuming you need English). Thai maps for Garmin GPS's come from ESRI Thailand, who have an office in BKK. (At least they did when I bought mine) You can Google the location. I suspect you can buy a Garmin at most Kiosks and be good.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work. It is dropping the signal now when I'm in the open sitting in traffic. There is no reasoning to it. It will drop at least 6 or more times for one trip.

If you're sitting in traffic, you may be in among tall buildings that block line-of-sight to the satellites. Signals also don't penetrate much metal, so placing the unit inside a metal framed building, inside an airplane, or away from the windows in your vehicle will cause dropouts.

If it happens on the open road where there are no buildings, and your GPS is placed where it has a clear line of sight to the sky, I would start worrying.

Yesterday at Cheang Wattana by Central, lost 3 times before I got to Vib-Rangsit. No tall buildings, no overpasses, phone was on the dash.

Have you tried other GPS receivers on the same dash to compare if they get better signal? I had problem with a Galaxy Note on dash of one car I used, turned out the car dash entertainment system electrics was radiating some interference around the dash area blocking GPS signal and I got much better reception with GPS antenna in back of car.

Like I said earlier, my S5 very rarely lost signal....maybe 2 times in a few months and I used it daily from about the same position.
