Two more monks arrested #BreakingNews

Featured Replies

TWO monks were arrested this morning at the Samaki Rainsy pagoda in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district.

The two monks, Khet Vannak and Thach Sang, from nearby Stung Meanchey pagoda, were arrested when they arrived to support villagers from Preah Vihear, said Yan Soeun, a monk at the Stung Meanchey pagoda.

“Meanchey district police arrested two monks when they joined the group,” Soeun said.

“The group seeks justice for land dispute victims in Preah Vihear.”

The group had been staying at the Samaki Rainsy pagoda and planned to march a petition to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s house, he said.

The arrests follow seven Boeung Kak activists being sentenced to one year in prison yesterday, just a day after their arrest for blocking traffic. A monk, three activists and an opposition official were also arrested yesterday.

The two monks were questioned by district police before being taken to Phnom Penh Municipal Police headquarters, Soeun said.

“I condemn the authorities. These monks have done nothing wrong. It is a violation of their human rights.”

Choem Sitha, Meanchey district police chief, could not be reached for comment.
