Nimmen area - basic, inexpensive Thai dishes

There'a a new place (at least I think it is new) on Nimmen Soi 5 (that's the corner of Nimmen with the Siam Commerical Bank.)

This place is about 1 1/4 blocks east of Nimmen, right next door to the Librarista and across the street from the D-fine pub.

Basic Thai dishes going for 35-40 baht, with a few going for 50 baht. The menu has nice big photos of the dishes and the older Thai guy running the place speaks English quite well. Free water "serve yourself" style out of the big jug.

Nice, clean dining area, sitting outside, of course. Nimmen lacks these kinds of places, so if you live nearby, I hope you can give this place some custom.

Or you could go to Maya food court, get the same food for the same price and have air-con and parking thrown in.

Really? Have you eaten at the place Julie mentioned?

Not sure what thr big deal is. 30-40bt dishes available everywhere all over the city.

Nimmen is the same dont you know.

The only difference is these places turnover a little bit quicker because the greedy landlords dont allow a moderate business to progress..

You need a hell of a lot of customers paying 30bt to cover a 20k plus rent. Nimmen road has rents 40k plus.

Why dont you try the lemon tree you will think thats the Ritz .....no seriously!

To know that it is the same food since you stated you can get the same food at Maya.

No, it is not easy to find 30-40 baht dishes in the Nimmen area. The street with the Burmese restaurant, opposite Salad Concept, offers good value meals, but the environment is a bit "ratty."

I believe the business I am referring to is family run and the restaurant is located in what use to be the front yard, so it is possible that he is not paying any rent. Lots of other homeowners in the Nimman area are also building units to rent in what use to be their front yard.

Oops. I forgot to mention that the Lemon Tree is a bit far for me, although I have heard they have excellent value meals.

Also, something about dining right near the busy road does not appeal to me.

Yes you could especially helpful if you don't have a car and it is the cool season.

Julie M is trying to post positive information, you should try it sometime instead of nit picking negativity.

That wasn't the thread title.

As eyecatcher said, plenty of places doing the same thing, in Nimman area, Maya probably does it best.

I dislike the food and the atmosphere at Maya food court. I've tried four different food vendors and still can't find a good dish. Edible, yes. Good, no. Dining atmosphere is not that great.

Cow Soi stall, good but the servers are rude.

Egg noodle stall, very fast and tasty. Red pork and wantons nice

Curry stall, nice lady pork is great but the chicken is awful.

Surrounded by college girls in uniforms, atmosphere first class.

The "cow soi" at Maya is average at best. Much better and cheaper "cow soi" to be found just up Huay Gaow and across the street. Look for the 7/11, turn left at that corner, and walk straight ahead maybe 50 meters. 30 baht for "cow soi" with chicken and 40 baht for beef. Far, far superior to the Maya experience in every way.

Edit: I believe this is open for lunch only, maybe 11 AM to 2 PM but I am not sure.

The shack behind NAT Honda?

Too rough (dirt floor) and dirty for me and no aircon.

It's clear that you consider food to be a commodity like zinc or frozen pork bellies. For you, if a dish is called chicken with basil, it's all the same wherever it's made.. Preparation and quality of ingredients are irrelevant. It must simplify your life immensely having the possible different tastes of a dish be imperceptible.. You are to be envied.

AnotherOneAmerican, the directions I gave for the "cow soi" place weren't very good. Turn left after the 7/11, go straight about 10 meters, and then you have the choice of going a bit left down what appears to be a dead end street, or taking the curve around toward the shack you mentioned. Go down what appears to be the dead end street and the "cow soi" is there. She recently moved there from the restaurants one block over, the same street with the shack you refer to.

I didn't think that shack does any food, but I agree with you that it is way to "ratty."

True Blue: I'd love some suggestions. When I am in the mood for a proper restaurant I often do various Japanese places, Why Not, Beer Republic and sometimes Sahara, and the new Indian Fusion place in front of Starbucks is pretty good. I've tired of Smoothy Blues and Ming Muang. If you have some suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I'm not a big fan of Thai food, even though I eat it all the time, but some places are exceptional and worth pointing out. Maybe this is one of them?

It's not so exceptional as to be worth the trip if you live around the moat area, but if you are around Nimmen then please check it out.

Now if you can find the khao soi place behind the 7/11 off of Huay Gaow, that's the best I have ever found in Chiang Mai. Your tastes may vary.

We're discussing places that sell Thai food for 35-40bht a dish.

I'm amazed you can find places where the quality varies much for that price.

I am amazed that you can not find such places but It is consistent with the general low level of awareness found these days.

Sometimes you can. There is a place across from Suan Doc Hospital that sells a few pork dishes that are really excellent and right in that price range. I always eat there when in that neighborhood.

There used to be an amazing Kow Mok Gai place in the upstairs food court at KSK that was so good that it ruined every other similar stall for me. It was by far the best I've ever had and at a normal food court price.

I think that what happened is that AnotherOneAmerican's desire to be unpleasant outweighed his common sense and now he's stuck with an indefensible position. At least, I hope that's the case. It would be too sad to believe that he truly subscribes to his assertions.

My Thai acquaintances agree with you that the food at the Maya basement food court is too plain. Their favourite food court is in the Airport mall basement. I will try out your restaurant suggestion on Nimmen corner soi 5, thanks!

It's not on the corner of Nimmen Soi 5. Siam Commercial Bank is on the corner. Go 1 1/4 blocks east (toward town) and it's right before the Librarista.

Because Niman traffic is the worst in CNX.
