Visa Question - Urgent

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I flew to Thailand with a tourist Visa, which is ending in 2 weeks, while i was here, i managed to obtain Thai nationality and got my Thai National ID Card and Thai Passport. While i don't want to leave Thailand to England simply because it's expensive, i was wondering what is the best possible way to get an Exit stamp on my British passport? I heard that entering Laos as a Thai national only requires the Thai national ID card, Can i leave Thailand at the border using my British Passport and enter Laos using my ID Card and re-enter Thailand with it.

I'm not sure if i can enter Laos using a Thai passport if i don't have a Thai exit stamp.

Any information would be useful, thanks!

you will have to fly out and then come back in on your Thai passport, can only do a passport swop at an airport via air.

you can get a year extension on your UK passport (1,900 baht i believe) by being a Thai, and then swop passport on next visit to uk

Best option is to simply fly to a neigbouring country on your UK passport and return on your Thai passport.

The problem with landborders is that there they check for exit stamps from the country you just left, so it is difficult to swap passports there.

A cheap flight with Airasia or such shouldn't cost much. Any neighbouring country will do.

Let's say if i fly to Cambodia or Laos, Leaving Thailand on my British passport, and entering Cambodia or Laos on my Thai Passport, coming back to Thailand, won't the immigration check my exit stamp on my Thai passport?

Immigration at airports do not check for stamps from another country.

They only check at borders to be sure a person did not depart turn around and come right back without entering the other country.

Ahh right, thanks for the info :)

The OP asked about using his Thai ID to enter Laos, not his Thai passport.

It sounds reasonable that he could do that.

So a person could get stamped out at the airport, have some lunch and then enter without really ever leaving?

I think you should read the OP again. He does not want to stay in Thailand on a UK-passport and swapp passports.

No that is not possible.

All the airports here I know of have separate arrival and departure areas.

For one thing it takes more than just the ID card to enter Laos. It requires a border pass.

The border pass has to stamped by Thai immigration or they will not allow a person to enter Laos.

Cheapest option would be to leave Thailand by bus using Thai ID car into Laos, fly back to Bkk and enter on Thai passport.

He needs to use his UK passport when he leaves Thailand to clear his entry on it.

He could leave Thailand, enter Laos on and leave Laos using the UK passport then enter on his Thai passport.

Can this be done Via land? or must be Air?

Only by air for the return trip.

Aha, thanks a lot, found the answer :)

You certainly were productive during the time you were here. Well done!

Thanks, Although it took a lot of running around getting dual nationality, once this visa issue is sorted, i still have to face the inevitability of Thai military conscription because I'm under 30 :(

Currently Still looking into that matter on a different thread lol

About the army. Do you speak thai? I am not sure if you have to do your military service if you can't communicate with someone. Or maybe you already did your service in UK?! Not sure if they can force you to do again...

The language ability is valid objection..

Having served in a foreign country probably less, as in case of the OP as mandatory conscription ended in 1960.

I thought you could only serve if both your parents are Thai? I am assuming the OP is only half Thai of course.

The criteria is if you have Thai nationality or not, not if both parents have Thai nationality.
