Harlan Wolff. Wasn't a bad book.

"Wasn't a bad book." Quite a ringing endorsement.

"Thailand is terrified." and apparently about to saved by super farang. Surely something of a wet dream for many a TV poster.

The blurb on Amazon illuminates why it might appeal to some of our resident Bar Stool Crime Scene Investigators. Hopefully the author didn't write the summary below or you'll really be in for a cliché-ridden farang adventure.

"abducting young innocents"

"ritual horror"

"struggling with advancing years"

"sordid world"

Sounds like something out of some TV's more popular threads.

Thailand is terrified. A sadistic serial killer has been abducting young innocents for his ritual horror and the authorities are clueless.

Carl Engel is an enigma. The blunt Londoner has forged a thirty-year career as a private investigator amid the chaos of Thailand's political history. Struggling with advancing years and a decreasing workload he is approached by an elderly American with a lucrative missing persons case. The case descends into the sordid world of the elusive serial killer and a menacing web of political intrigue dating back to the Vietnam War. Carl must use his guile and experience to stay alive

Sounds like a dime-a-dozen novel for the sedentary barstool crowd: elderly farang to the rescue of weak and helpless Thailand; he's an enigma!; private eye; Vietnam War; ... every cliché on offer.

I bet bargirls, corrupt cops, drugs, Thai superstition, prostitutes, temple spirits, booze, sleazy tuktuk drivers and seedy bars also feature on every page.
