New northern bus terminal to replace Morchit 2

Why would you have a bus terminal in the centre of the city when most people don't live in the centre of the city?

At least half the people would need to spend an hour or two getting IN to the bus terminal and then spend an hour or two getting OUT of the city.

Why would you build a major new inter-region bus terminal for Bangkok in a location not served currently or perhaps for many years into the future by any of the city's main rail transit lines?

At least Mochit 2 is a pretty short hop from the nearest BTS and MRT stations at Mochit. But Rangsit and Chaengwattana??? Those are both half hour to hour taxi/bus/van rides or longer from much of Bangkok, except for the northern suburbs.

Is someone assuming that the only people traveling to/from the North and Northeast destinations are those who live in the northern suburbs of Bangkok??? That's crazy!!!

Le't look at it this way.

- Having regional based bus stations - as already exists - makes sense for a city the size (pop) of BKK.

- When Mo Chit 1 moved to Mo CHit 2 to allow for the BTS depot to be built, there were lots of concerns expressed that it was not as convenient (people don't like change) as Mo Chit 1 had many BMTA buses connecting with it. The solution, extend bus routes.

- However, given the lack of dedicated roads and limited on/off ramps connecting the expressway, buses cause traffic jams in the area and buses travelling to or from Mo Chit can literally add another 30-60 mins to a trip time due to current poor design of the access roads especially during peak. That is why come operators have built their own terminals separate from Mo Chit eg. NCA and the one opp Central Latphrao,

- Similarly, some people waste time getting to and from Mo Chit 2 due to poor interconnection - no direct mass transit link,

- Mo Chit 2 was built on SRT land, they need the land back to build a new train depot. Ergo, a new bus station has to be built. It makes little sense to build it in the south, west or east of BKK for patently obvious reasons.

- The little land that is available, is only in the region of outer north suburabs than mid northern suburbs. Thus, it places a new bus terminal in the zone between Chaeng Wattana and Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok rd

As long as the new terminal(s) has a direct link to mass transit - in the case the SRT Red Line - situating the terminal in the far northern suburbs is not really an issue.

The southern bus terminal moved further out - obviously too far.

The eastern terminal will move to Bang Na junction.

The trend is there as the land is no available - a forward planning issue and we all know that such rarely happens in BKK.

I dunno... I've spent 12 hours on a 5 hour drive on many a trip to Issan.

Can someone tell me what the massive dig that starts before the bus terminal and ends around the Bang Sue train station is? I was on the Changwattana tollway today and the dig seemed to go on for ever and ever.

It is the SRT Dark Red line (Bang Sue to Rangsit) and the new Bang Sue Intercity Terminal
