November 18, 201411 yr I'm a TEFL certified teacher in Phuket and am currently teaching at a private school. I have an opportunity to teach private English lessons to some students in my own time and wondered what should be the going rate? I see what the language schools charge but this will be in my apartment. I'm curious what the 1 on 1 rate should be and what a group rate should be. Any suggestions? Al
November 18, 201411 yr What would you be happy with? It differs depending who your teaching .. a group of 9-10 year old brats.. 1,000b each per hour.. at least that's me :-D 400-600 baht per hour is generally the norm.. about same cumulative for groups!
November 18, 201411 yr Popular Post Also if teaching young children or females I would teach some where else than your apartment. Just in case of accusations! Edited November 18, 201411 yr by casualbiker

November 19, 201411 yr Rates go up incrementally for me. Thais 300b, Koreans 500b, Russians and Japanese 1000b. Don't charge less than 500b per hour for a non Thai. It makes it harder on the rest of us.
November 19, 201411 yr Author Wow some of the rates you're quoting are way higher than I expected. Even the language schools in Phuket don't charge that much, especially the person who said 1000bht per hour. I forgot to add that I'm English so a native speaker. From all the other teachers I work with they have all recommended 150bht per hour for a group of students and around 350bht individually. The issue I've got is that my partner (who is Thai) thinks that even this is too much. The students are all Thai secondary and he says that the parents don't earn that much and won't even be able to pay 150bht per hour.
November 19, 201411 yr That's why I mentioned "what are YOU happy with" If you charge 500b per group. Maximum 7 students. That's 71b per student. Charge at least 1 week in advance, then you will have less cancellations. It's then up to the students to work together to ensure numbers and payment!
November 19, 201411 yr Other thing to think about. Do the parents own their own house, car etc. If yes then they are probably earning more than you!
November 19, 201411 yr Charge 1000B/hour and pro-rate it according to group size up to a maximum of 7 students.

Try to get not more than 10 students, charge 100 baht/hour and let them pay in advance. Thais are pretty good in not showing up again, so it's not your business, when they pay upfront. But when tutoring one on one, you should never go less than 500 baht. Full stop.

Going rate in Bangkok is 1 student=600 Baht per hour with group rates dropping the Baht Per Hour by 200 Baht for each additional student. 1st student 600 = 600 Baht per hour 2nd student and beyond 400 with total of = 1000 baht per hour 3rd student 400 with total of 1400 baht per hour Exceptions are made for students beyond a year and of course parents which are your friends of a student. This is in a professional environment with Degreed and Certified Native Speaker, large classroom environment, and computer access. 24 hour advance notification for cancellations or students pay full price for the day. No more than 3 absences a year (flexible situational adaptations) Payment made in advance for once a student is taught you cannot take back your services. Note: Proficiency and goals of the student also come into play with the cost. Learning ones ABCs is less than gaining proficiency for University access.
December 28, 201411 yr what would you charge if you are a non certified teacher and someone wants to practice speaking English with you. I am from the United States and people keep approaching me wanting to know if I can teach English to there kids.

I am from the United States and people keep approaching me wanting to know if I can teach English to there kids. TEFL certificate classes teach nothing in regards to private tutoring nor grammar nor regular school classes. You are as qualified to teach private English lessons as a person completing 4 week TEFL course. Rates depend on area and level. Students attending an international school in Bkk would pay more than a small school in Issan. If you are just getting started and gaining experience don't expect a lot. With experience you will become more selective and can charge more.

Almost all reputable TEFL courses place an emphasis on grammar and teaching grammar. Many TEFL courses have teaching practices in local schools. Getting back to the OP, you charge what people are prepared to pay. You'll wait a long time for students if you charge 1,000 or even 500 thb per hour in Chiang Mai unless the students are coming to you because of your reputation. Location, experience and reputation are factors that affect rates. Edited December 28, 201411 yr by Loaded
December 29, 201411 yr I was thinking of about 250 baht per hour but I do not want to be to cheap. I think I will start with that.
December 29, 201411 yr Start with a low rate and tell your students that it's a discounted rate because you're just starting out. Then once you have more students, a better reputation and more experience, and are thus offering a higher quality service, start to charge more.
