Synagogue attack: Netanyahu vow in 'battle for Jerusalem'

(BBC) Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to win a "battle for Jerusalem" after a deadly attack on a synagogue.

Two Palestinians killed four rabbis in West Jerusalem before being shot dead. A policeman later died of his wounds.

Mr Netanyahu vowed to "settle the score with every terrorist" saying that those "who want to uproot us from our state and capital... will not succeed".

Jerusalem has seen weeks of unrest, partly fuelled by tension over a disputed holy site.

Tuesday's attack was the deadliest in Jerusalem for six years. There were about 25 worshippers in the synagogue at the time and at least seven people were also seriously wounded.

Mr Netanyahu ordered the homes of the attackers to be destroyed, saying: "We are in a battle over Jerusalem, our eternal capital."

The Israelis have the power to clear every Muslim from the city, so why don't they?

Oh right.... they won't have anyone to do the menial work.

The point you were trying to make were lost on me... what were you trying to say? no really, what?

Meanwhile, the police man who was involved in the shooting also succumbed to his injuries and died,

and the mayhem will continue with more casualties on both sides....

It sounds like the Palestinian terrorists and their supporters better keep that in mind. Netanyahu is not going to just ignore this hateful attack on innocent civilians or the Palestinian celebrations afterwards.

They are not going to win the hearts of the world, no matter what they do, but they will defend their nation and keep growing stronger and and more successful, as they have done since they began 66 years ago. thumbsup.gif

One of the principal Palestinian complaints is that as Jews emigrated to Israel they preferred to do the menial work themselves, thus displacing Palestinian laborers. Even so, the Palestinians left inside Israel enjoyed a much higher standard of living than those living in the surrounding countries, owing to the relatively prosperous economy of the Jesish state.

Your snarky, anti-semitic remarks merely reveal your ignorance. Put a sock in it.

A repeat action of policies etc followed in the middle of last century by a European chappy which finally embroiled the world in a dreadful carnage.

Some peoples leaders will never or don't want to learn from history do they?

Has anybody read if the UN has condemned the attack on the synagogue?

They are usually Johnny-on-the-spot in these matters.

Even condemnation by a UN political chief would be nice. Let's all sit and wait for this to happen.

Why on earth would that matter? According to many pro-Israelis on this forum, whatever the UN says isn't worth the breath used to say it.

If it would be "nice" for some condemnation from the UN, then it is also nice when the condemnation is against Israeli criminal acts. Surely?

Having pointed out that inconsistency, I agree with you. It will be interesting to see if they do.condemn this deadliest attack in six years that killed five people. Five! Or is that a death toll worthy of the UN's time? I'm not sure.

I for one condemn it.

Actually they do not have this power.

Most of the Palestinians in East Jerusalem are (unlike Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip) permanent

residents (with an option to apply for citizenship, which they usually decline). Previous attempts by some Israeli

governments to deport Palestinians from the West Bank proved to be tricky when cases reached the Supreme

Court. Trying this on permanent residents, not very likely.

Besides, despite the allure of this idea to some on the right wing, there is no overall popular support for such a

thing in Israel, especially not when considering 20% of the populace is Arab.

Sure. Like he did with Iran. Talk is cheap. He might not ignore it, but what's he going to do?

His coalitions is facing a major crisis, with possible elections. The economy could not stand another prolonged military operation. For all his bravado, he's with one ear to the ground as to what the USA says.

Though Israel might win the battle they definitely will not win the hearts of the world with this kind of retaliation.

As opposed to the attack itself?

Oh yes, you killed 4 of us and so we are going to kill 5000 of you (including a few hundred children). Very appropriate response .......

Is this something Netanyahu actually said or hinted at?

So, Netanyahu is going to go completely over the top with a disproportionate response that leaves scores of women and children dead. What a novel idea. Why hasn't Israel tried that before? coffee1.gif

Must have missed it - where did he say anything along these lines?

" Mr Netanyahu ordered the homes of the attackers to be destroyed, saying: "We are in a battle over Jerusalem, our eternal capital."".

Once again Israel is going ahead with the international crime of collective punishment.

Once again Israel is going to find every excuse it can to displace Arabs and insert Jews in their place, to try to overrun Jerusalem.

Once again, Israel is going to exact hugely disproportionate revenge.

Netanyahu is taking a gamble here. He's gambling that the international community will be so shocked at the atrocity that they will turn a blind eye to this next iteration of Zionist ethnic cleansing.

He may succeed in his gamble, or maybe the world is awake enough to his devious and bloody methods that they will not tolerate another massacre of Palestinians.

I think it will be a close call. It all depends on how well the propaganda machine gets into gear.

Well, not like a Jewish family will come to build a house over the demolished one (IF it will indeed be demolished), Where was anything mentioned about exacting hugely disproportionate revenge? You are not even bothering to qualify those statements....

Do you actually know about something planned along the lines of "ethnic cleansing"?

And you talk about propaganda machine getting in gear, no less....

Wise words there. His Iran scaremongering tactics have failed but they were a bit duplicitous in the first place coming from the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons. He has had to back down trying to alter the status quo on the temple. Mount and as you say he cannot afford another Gaza. I guess we will just see more tit for tat killings.

Netanyahu was not the one trying to change the status quo on the Temple Mount.

As said in another topic, there are worse than him on the Israeli right wing.

Everyone expects him to respond, even the Jihadist terrorists. The question only is how hard.

The jihadists want him to respond with another over the top retaliation, as every time Israel does so it loses world support. If he does, he is just playing their game.
