...always try to wear a belt, as it's ez to wrap it around your hand with the buckle at the end and swing it,...

So you get jumped by a group of guys, and you say 'Hang on a second', then start to take off your trousers?

That'll work if you smile maniacally as you do it!

Time was when you could walk around wearing lots of gold and expensive watches. Sadly those days are over except for the central areas of Bangkok during the daytime.

The recent psycho killings and attacks have scared everyone but you have much more chance of getting into an altercation over a road rage incident or causing an argument over a bill.

Just think before you act because the best case scenario is you're going to spend hours in the Cop Shop filling out statements.

Here is a sobering reason as to why not to carry a weapon in Thailand ...

husband-kills-wife-on-bangkok-pattaya-highway

As they drove along Highway 7 in the Bang Na area, an intense verbal argument began which forced Khun Tanapisit to pull his car off the main highway onto a side-road.

The pair began a physical altercation and during the scuffle, a fruit knife was allegedly picked-up by the suspects Wife who stabbed her Husband in the hand. This infuriated the suspect who disarmed his wife and repeatedly stabbed her in the stomach. She died minutes later on the roadside.

The best weapon is your brain but some people tend to forget how to use it when they are out drinking. The second best is attitude, don't react with anger and be polite.

The rules are pretty much the same all over the world,be polite, say please and thank you and that takes care of 99% of times.

Anyone can be at the wrong place at the wrong time but even if you would carry a weapon when tha ataack comes as a surprise it won't do you much good.

Relax people.

there is not much one can do to defend against unprovoked attacks.

another problem is that we walk around in shorts and sandals, so the "defence weapon" has to be very small

possible solutions:

- pepper spray

- mini-taser

- whistle

I don't really understand how the German in Udon got attacked with two Thai friends sitting with him ?

Did the criminals attack by surprise from behind?

I agree with awareness and caution being the best defence, running away is not always an option though.
