Foreign beggars(?) in Chiang Mai - Nimmen area

Recommended Posts

I had an encounter with this person just a few nights ago. It was at one of those roadside bars on nimman. Woman in raggedy clothes and with 2 small children asked to sit at my table. She told me she's from Turkmenistan and that she got robbed of all her money (2000$) recently and now struggling to find a job while on a tourist visa....

She was really vague when I asked where her husband was. He was most likely hiding somewhere close by. Clearly she gets more pity if she doesn't bring him. After I turned down buying any of her photographs she then just straight up started begging instead. I turned her down and then her husband came and picked her up. He was in a very bad mood and seemed pissed off at me because I didn't give her any money.

That's some quality tourists right there.

Very interesting story.

However, how do you suppose they got to Thailand in the first place?

And why come? Because it seems to me that Thailand is not a fun place without, money, purpose, good connections with educated Thai people here.

Any less of any of these three factors makes Thailand not worth staying, (I think).

You need all three.

With regard to the people that beg, I do feel sorry for them.

There was a farang girl sitting on the West side of the moat, the other afternoon, She had her back to me, but seemed to be crying profusely. Her circus pants just seemed to be a little too pressed. I kept walking. There is a good chance she was looking for some sympathy cash. Short brown hair....

I was really hoping that you'd be able to get through an entire day without mentioning 'circus pants' in one of your posts...

I haven`t seen these Russians as described in the OP, but I have seen many of these types in London.

If these people are like the same, than they don`t work alone, some of it is actually organised by gangs. A child or children accompany them serve two purposes, to gain them more sympathy and to deter guys they approach from hitting on them for favours in kind for money.

Very easy, all they need to do is obtain the airfare for a one way economy flight into Thailand, then they`re in with virtually no questions asked. If approached by these people, best to say from the start; not interested and let them walk away and seek for other mugs. I have no doubts that these types are now numerous in Bangkok, Pattaya and quickly spreading to other parts of Thailand.

Where Op say about "Russians"?

USSR its not Russia. And of course not all new countrys start from territory USSR have ethnic Russians.thumbsup.gif

Wow. Racist, sexist, misogynistic all in one post. You are a piece of bad and smelly work, bangmai. I, for one, will be avoiding your comments in the future.

Gotta love the self righteous indignation on this thread, how very festive.

Chiangmai Thaivisa folks living with the horror that they might be separated from a hundred baht.

People do get down on their luck and even if they might be "putting it on " a bit, it can't do your Kharma any harm to give them fifty or a hundred baht.

Anybody know where I can get cheap potatoes ??

Can you spot me 100 baht for a beer?

You missed out big time. she was the star of a new reality show "Can you spare a dime " Every person who stopped and contributed a small amount of change was reward with $ 1000 cash.

Moral of the story stop and ask you don't have to part with cash, One day it could be your daughter or grandaughter sitting there... In genuine need.

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.

Once I built a railroad, now it's done.

I just stated that I didn't "volunteer." She was by the moat; not drowning in it. She was about 80 m from the largest Psychiatric Hospital in the North. Should I have summoned the orderlies? The only thing that gets maliciously repeated here more than the "only 10% of Americans have passports," is "Why do Americans get involved in other people's business?" I guess if we can't be guilt free for removing a mass murderer from Iraq, then we probably shouldn't volunteer assistance to psychopaths, while in a foreign country.

When people generally refer to "Americans shouldnt get involved in other peoples affairs" , the tend to mean that the USA shouldnt bomb other Countries, rather than Americans not helping out people in distress on a one to one basis .

There is a huge difference between the USA invading Iraq and you yourself coming to the aid of a crying female.

There is a certain criteria that stipulates psychopathic behaviour, and crying 80 meters away from a psychiatric hospital is NOT one of them .

So, you saw a young lady crying in the street and you didnt go and assist her because you thought that she may be a psychopath and because of the critisism the USA got for invading Iraq ?

One word: Scam.

Best way to get rid of one of those is to relate your story like a country western song:

Lost my wife; lost my house; lost my pickup truck; lost my dog. Don't care too much about the wife and home, but the dog and the pickup truck <Sob, tears in eyes, quivering lip> Scam artist - Gone in 60 Second!

"Self righteous"??? What is a Russian woman doing begging (hustling) in Chiang Mai? The reason is, it is easy money and she doesn't have to work for it. When you visit Europe, the gypsies are running around doing the same thing because some people are stupid enough to give them money.

If it makes you feel good to give money to people like this, then do it but don't expect others to support people like this. Take your "cheap potato" comment on down the road.

I'd offer her 100 THB to take her picture. Then I'd go down to local BIB and inform them that they have a farang begger working the streets, and by the way, here's her picture. thumbsup.gif It would be 100 baht well spent. I hate scam artists regardless of their race, religion, or country of origin.

Someone sitting on a bench and crying in public is not behavior that warrants a stranger offering to escort her to Suan Prung. Her boyfriend may have just broken up with her, her cat may have just died or she could have just lost her passport. A nice person might have sat down and offered a handkerchief and a kind word, but couldn't be blamed for simply walking on and not getting involved.

Now if she was standing on the bench yelling incoherently, or approaching strangers with incomprehensible lines of dialog or repeatedly walking out in traffic without concern for her safety -- then that would be a cause for concern and the correct approach would be to enlist the help of a Thai police officer with the suggestion that perhaps an evaluation at Suan Prung could be helpful.

In any event, it's not a good idea to try to take a stranger into Suan Prung by yourself and the Thai police are very familiar with bringing foreigners into Suan Prung for evaluation and assistance. They'd rather do that with a foreigner acting strangely than arrest them and have to deal with them in their jail.

I saw that clown pants girl a couple of hours ago. I had just finished a big lunch and carried what I couldn't eat home in a take-out bag for the soi dogs. She was looking skinny and hungry, I crossed the street, she ain't getting any of my food, I'm too smart for that old trick.

Ugly, ugly ugly.

How it must hurt you to lose 100 baht......

"throw her in jail and get her deported, I'll even go out of my way to turn her in myself....."

How sad some posters are.

I saw her today near the South West corner, she smiled, I smiled, we decided Indonesian was our most common language and had a pleasant lunch talking for over 3 hours. She is intelligent, funny and did not ask me for anything, nor did she cry..

You must be fun at parties.

Nice to hear Dante99's openminded story after yours. Well done, Dante!

Yes, Dante's story was heartwarming, but it should have been prefaced with...

Nel mezzo del camin di nostra vita

mi ritrovai per una selva oscura

che la diretta via era smarrita.

It could have been the way out that led him to paradise here in Chiang Mai.
