Bloody hell...Welsh stock here too (though born and raised in England). The simplest method is to go to the microsoft website, download, burn and get a licence key.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Windows-8.1/productID.288401200

I would suggest that you burn to DVD and test before starting your install. If you have a method of backing up everything off your wife's laptop (which you should) then you do that and start afresh. In the nicest possible way I do not trust any of the "installs" that come out of the helpful shops in Thailand. If you are serious then get your media ready and also create a media version of Darik's Boot and Nuke

Some will claim this is overkill but if I was investing in a full Windows licence I would want to be sure I was bringing NOTHING from my previous "black" install. Running DBAN will take hours so I suggest running it overnight. When it is finished you simply pop your Windows media into the drive and work carefully through the install (quite simple but still read each step). My advice is to set yourself a day to achieve the complete build (all your favourite bits of software...security,etc)....you'll be finished around lunchtime but won't feel frustrated if you come up against a question. If you have a 2nd computer or a mobile device then have that by your side....mostly to give you something to do as you wait between button presses. If you want a list of suggested freeware for your new build then just ask....and you'll start a nerd-fest-fight!

Would it not be cheaper to buy locally?

http://www.jib.co.th/web/index.php/product/readProduct/14110/26/index.html That's under 100USD.

I also wonder whether MS still do SEA-activation versions of their software, as these used to be even cheaper.

The JIB product in the link is a disk in a box as far as I know.

MS SEA-activation software was also a disk in a box (well, a sleeve) but it could only be activated from an IP address in SEAsia. Once activated it would work anywhere. It used to be quite common in shops like TukCom but I dont see it so much any more, though I haven't been particularly looking for it.

Just thinking whether it will be cheaper. All depends on the OP's location. If he is far from shops it could work out a lot more expensive. Either way I think we agree that he should have physical media and perform a clean install.

I'll document an install if all us nerds promise not to fight ;)

As long as you can be sure it is legit then this will probably be the best solution. Request a proper clean install (suggest a drive wipe).

Hi, Sorry for butting in but may I ask?

I have genuine windows7, should update to win 8 and does it cost me to do so?

Thanks for your knowledge on this.

It would cost you quite a lot and I see no point.

I would wait until you change your PC as by then there will be another newer version available, which you may get included with the PC anyway.

I have win 7 and win 8.1/8.2. I strongly dislike WIN 8.1 and 8.2 which brought back the start button is also hard to work with, so my brand new Vaio touch screen PC with Win 8.2(Genuine Thai Edition from IT City) is sitting next to me whilst I enjoy myself working with WIn 7. I understand they are now working on Windows 10 so perhaps wait for that.

Estrada, the only real difference between Windows 8.1 and 7 is the start screen and charms bar. Head to www.classicshell.net, download, install, spend about 5 minutes tweaking and you have a normal Windows 7 start menu. Through the advanced settings you can disable most of the things that annoy you.

The IT shops are selling off their remaining win 7 licenses, saw that at tukcom the other day. Go for it, it's a great OS.

Just get what the shop sells

If it messes up take it back

They can all put free Windows on your machine that will update.

Absolutely correct. If you have Windows 7, under no conditions update to Windows 8. It is a tablet oriented operating system and will frustrate the hell out of you on a PC/Laptop, especially if you have experienced Windows 7, which will likely be the best overall OS that Microsoft will ever produce. Run it until your computer dies. You will be forced into using Windows 8 (or by then something even worse) soon enough when you buy a new computer. Seriously, don't do it.

Depending on the cost I would go with the online download.

I got my Win 8.0 cheap at 49 USD when it first came out. The advantages are that you can download it over and over again, you can create a DVD install etc. The worst thing it seems like you are virtually forced to update to Win 8.1 which to me seems to be a step backwards from Win 8.0 - especially the SEARCH facility.

If I had a genuine copy of Win 7 x64, then I probably would not bother to upgrade.

My Win 7 was a bit of a pirate piece of junk so going to Win 8 was a lot better, but the basic OS is very similar, 8.1 to mean seems like a dumb down.

You can get DVD's of Win 8.1 here but I would make sure that you back up all of your license keys etc.

I lost my original E mail from the Win 8 download and only have the install key that they supplied, without the original code in the first e mail I have lost the ability to get the media centre for free. (It is not a big issue though)

100% don't go to Windows 8 you will hate it and you won't understand how to use it.

However it looks like the next one after Windows 8 which is Windows 10 ( there is no Windows 9) may be an OS that you may like. Microsoft is backing down on many of the dumb forced changes.

I got "legal" Windows 7 awhile ago in Pattaya but then the version available in all the places I checked was OEM 64 bit at the time. Works fine and Microsoft was happy with registering me and doing automatic updates online. Checked around TukCom and ended up getting the computer at Wattana Systemation on Pattaya Klang. They said they could get the 32 bit sent out from Bangkok, but I wanted the new computer to be up and running immediately. Thought there might be some problems with my existing programs/software, but everything seemed to work well.

Why use w8 if you really want w7?

Win 8 or 8.1 isn't a poorer choice than Win 7. It does have some nice functionality but Win 7 is great. If you are going to use Win 8 then Classic Shell and it isn't a touch dependent environment any more. I'm happy with Win 8 and I love 7 64bit. Both are good enough and neither is Vista!!!

Win8.x is indeed OK even without a touch screen once you have installed Classic Shell as you say, but I really miss aero and the nice transparency features that Win7 offers and which Win8.x has done away with. And of course the charms and full-screen apps in Win8.x are just a nightmare of wasted screen space and user unfriendliness.

Win8.x always looks like a step back in time to Win3.x to me, with the square-edged windows and the solid colours and the absence of any graphical niceties.

I certainly feel no desire at all to upgrade my workhorse PC from Win7, as Win7 does the job perfectly.

If you have genuine Windows 7, KEEP IT. It's the best consumer operating system by Microsoft ever. Windows 8 is a binary turd. Don't buy into the MS philosophy of constantly "upgrading". That is just their way of continuing to scam and fleece their customers.

When I read your OP my first thought was ..."Crikey, not another one from back home"...... but i was wrong.....Thank God.

It would seem, understandably, that most objections to Win 8 are interface based. I loved 7 but moved to 8 and do enjoy the accelerated start-up/shut-down times. For 99% of users 8 will be a faster, more efficient, experience. 7 does have more bells and whistles though.

... Or give Linux a test ride. It's free and the big distributions are very good for all stuff normal people do.
