BANGKOK: -- Authorities are searching for an African man suspected of having Ebola who has failed to report himself and shut off contact with the officials since Nov. 16.

Samuel Ceesay, 31 of Sierra Leone entered Thailand via Suvarnabhumi Airport on Nov. 13 with about 10 friends. The airport's disease control officers suspected Ceesay of having Ebola and detained him for examination at the Department of Disease Control.

Ceesay was then released on Nov. 15 and told to report to department every day. Officials escorted him to the Mode Sathorn Hotel in Bang Rak district where he had planned to stay. He refused to check in and left, according to the hotel staff.

Did his 10 friends stay there as well or did they just put that hotel on the immigration form? A group arrival from Sierra Leone, possibly suspicious in and of itself. i guess they might have some legitimate purpose for a visit but ....?

The hotel is next door to Surasak BTS, so he could be anywhere, quickly.

You couldn't make it up.

Certainly true Thailand is the hub of crass stupidity with a worldwide copyright on that matter.

According to the story:

1. He arrived at Suvarnabhumi and Disease Control Authorities suspected him of being infected with Ebola.

2. Immigration allowed him to enter

3. Officers escorted him to the hotel he reserved (Mode Sathorn).

4. He refused to check in to said hotel

5. Officers released him and let him go free.

Am I missing something here???

Unlike most here, it is my suspicion that the only symptoms of Ebola that he exhibited were the words "Sierra Leone" in his passport. Under those circumstances, asking him to stay in a hotel with daily checks for any real symptoms would be appropriate. Who knows why the guy wanted to leave. Maybe, he has a girlfriend somewhere else and/or did not like the prices at the hotel the authorities selected for him.

Indeed and I would add a second symptom, being black.

I cannot believe for a moment that the authorities would detain a Thai coming back from West Africa.

From the looks of Mode Sathorn hotel's website, I sort of doubt that immigration selected what appears to be a rather high-end hotel for him.

Once this story gets around, I wonder how Mode Sathorn's bookings will be looking.

Check possible E-Bola patient in at a hotel and tell him to report to local hospital on a daily basis........ shambolic response to say the least. One worries that an outbreak would be covered up to save embarrassment etc..... sooooo Thai.

<slaps forehead> ...when dealing with something so potentially serious and life threatening, why are people given a choice about whether they are detained?

Mind you, I guess the Thai's aren't so worried considering they have a cure for Ebola now. Not sure if it's actually been tested yet however or whether they just made it up.

He's got Ebola and he hasnt reported?

He's probably dead guys.

D'oh!!

Or

he never had it in the first place,

knows he has no symptoms

suspects the reason for the concern around him is his nationality............... and the hue of his skin.
