masuk
A friend of mine had his hip done by the top joint surgeon in Chiang Mai. I saw the same guy for a knee replacement. I was in Sriphat University Hospital for a week. Excellent medical services, lousy food! PM me and I'll look up the address of his Practice/office in Thae Pae Rd. northernjohn
sorry can't help you with those two hospitals. Had mine done a year ago Total cost 183,000 baht Spent 4 days in private room that is one extra. Was given a pill to take every day for two weeks. I did not as I thought it was just a pain pill. Wrong it had some thing in it to fight infection and help the bone muscle and metal come together. I was told it takes three months to get as good as it is going to get. So even though I felt fine walking at day 13 when he pulled the stitches he said about 400 meters was enough. Mind you I felt good like I could go a lot farther which I occasionally did but it really wasn't helping things. The Doctor did not know the cost up front. He guessed at 200,000 baht as the hip it self was 60,000 baht. I asked about the Ram and he said yes he could do it there he guessed about 350,000 baht and for Saun Dok about half way between the other two. He had been recommended to me by Dr. Suthee as the best Arthroscopic surgeon in Thailand. At the time I was considering arthroscopic surgery for my knee. But the pain did not disappear but became just a minor nuisance when I started taking MSM. The hip then became the major problem. Dr Chanakarn Phornphutkul (sports medicine) Rajavej Hospital, 053 801999 and 053 204545 (Orthodpedic clinic opposite the hospital on the other side of the river)

They were excellent and as I have a slight heart flutter, the heart specialist checked me out very thoroughly, and I was given a spinal block anaesthetic and a very light knock out which left no after effects when I came to. I'm usually groggy for days. A pleasant hospital, everyone seems to speak excellent English and I got friends to bring in some 'cordon bleu' food from 7-11 to heat in the microwave in the room. The cold hamburger and egg from the hospital kitchen was not really appetising. There is a need to keep an eye on the medications issued at check out. These are important and I was given medication for an older prescription.
Mapguy
Every individual is different, but a "standard" estimate would be around 180-190,000 bhat at Sriphat. The government side (Maharaj) would be cheaper. There would be the same surgeon and the same OR, but the facilities and nursing services are not what foreigners from economically rich countries would probably find acceptable. Ask your surgeon about that. Visit an orthopaedic ward in Maharaj and a room in the Sriphat quarters.
NancyL
Another consideration on Maharaj vs. Sriphat is the wait time. You'll be in a queue at Majaraj and last time I checked it was several months for an elective hip replacement at Maharaj. Everyone I know who has had one there has had it because of trauma and even then, they often have to wait 3 or 4 days for a hip replacement after an accident. The lowest cost I've seen at Maharaj for a hip replacement after an accident (like a pedestrian slip and fall) was 110,000 baht -- normally more like 140,000, but admittedly the fellows I've assisted often aren't in the best of condition going into the surgery. The ortho wards at Maharaj are crowded. Designed for 6 beds, but usually have 8 or 9, so you can reach out and touch the bed next to yours. No air con, but wouldn't be so bad this time of year. Food worse than Sriphat. No TV, wifi or privacy. But, the nurses and support staff are great (if you speak some Thai) and much attention with med students coming thru at all hours (of the day and night -- many interested in practicing their English patient interviewing skills) It could be a good experience if you're flexible and adventuresome because the medical care is good. But the amenities are very, very basic. Edited December 1, 2014 by NancyL

masuk
my knee lasted 75 years. The final straw was a few weeks in China at 4C, and the fact that all their subways have escalators almost to street level, and suitcases etc must be carried up the last section of 50 or so stairs. I'd like to think that bybthe time my knees are 75yrs old, my faculties would still be intact and be advising against going to China. I'm hoping that I don't get any memory problems and start forgetting this important piece of advice to self. Joking aside, did everyone manage to get the knee replacement done on their medical insurance? And if yes, can you please advise what annual policy costs are including any excess. Well, I'm told that a new knee is a lot more involved than a new hip/femur. It took me a few weeks of rest before being allowed to go upstairs again. Slowly increased the length of my walks. However, the muscle above the knee had to be worked on, and I've been using an exercise bike the past couple of months. It's going to be a year before I think it's all ok. But far better than before the operation, having the thing aching most of the time, locking up, painful to go upstairs. I doubt that I could have managed another cold spell. Just a problem with aging I guess. Thankfully my hearing is very good, but there are times when the dogs or the renovations above me could be turned down! The knee is a real bugger compared with the hip. After having the hip replaced the first thing usually noticed is absence of pain. After a knee replacement first thing noticed is pain, lots of it. I am not aware of the hip but I am of the knee.
