Does anyone know what this fruit is called?

Featured Replies

In English they're called physallis. Never seen them in Thailand before

They look a little like persimmons. "Look phlap" in Thai. Could just resemble them.

Physallis is correct. As kids in Africa we called them Cape Gooseberrys and they make a great jam.

I see them often here.... saw them yesterday here in Pattaya being sold by the dozen in a clear plastic box at one of the many fruit stands set up to provide the Russians.

I was going to start the same thread. these things are yummy. Look a lot like an orange cherry tomato.

You can't eat just one.

Closely related to tomatillo which is used in Mexican green chili dishes.

"Tohng taeng" is also a euphemism for pendulous swaying breasts, use that term in earshot of Thai people and they will think you are a cunning linguist..... or you'll get smacked by a large woman.
