You know, men who drink a lot and women who only stay home and watch soaps and don't know how to save (or make) a dime. Like, what is wrong with these people? Now after having met a lot of Thai people, generally hard-working middle class professionals, I realized that a lot of these clowns you read about on Thai visa are just a subset - whether small or large a percentage. These people really take the cake. Abandoning wife who is dying? Then... Really freaking sad state of affairs. You meet (and read about) all types! Well, too bad he needs 2 million baht? Wow. All lottery victims that were going to get killed if I did not give them a loan. Quite a guilt trip, but had to say no. All are still alive, and guess what? Still bilking victims out of gambling money. Just remember, 90 percent of any loan given to gambling "types" will not go to their debt. They will foolishly put it back into gambling play. It just gets worse. My daughter is a manager for a major casino in Nevada. 20 years now. Saw everything first hand...and heard any story you can throw. And at 70+, he doesn't have much time to waste. I agree, Bad thing to do, but in a way understandable. Why not stay with the dying wife, aswell? Go visit, show some concern. samsensam Posted December 5, 2014 Share Posted December 5, 2014 a few years ago i let my thai gf of the time stay in my apartment while i was visiting friends in singapore. when i returned she presented me with a post card she'd found from a chinese friend given to me when i worked in china a few years previously. she accused me of having an affair. i could not even remember being given the post card or keeping it. it was clearly from a friend and it must have been at the bottom of a box of stuff in my wardrobe. this meant she must have been through absolutely everything in my room! and this was the best she could find to accuse me of something! she left and was never invited back. i will never have a thai living with me. Are you really as naive as you sound, or are you just one of those farangs who can only deal with other farangs? Many Americans are married to Thais, Vietnamese, Filipinas and other foreigners. Many of the foreign spouses suffer from culture shock and seek refuge with their native peoples. Thus, enclaves of foreign natives evolve and thrive. People are primarily social, and showing an interest in their native lands or their social gatherings engenders a kinship to you. Having a spouse from that native land makes you a de facto member of the enclave. Perhaps Thais simply do not like you. I only speak a little Thai, my wife is not Thai so that is my poor excuse. However, I know and am friends with several Thais. We drink Regency, go to bull fights, run the bars, and ride our bikes--just like friends do. Perhaps, but I have known many who were not adventurous, educated or motivated. Many have come with their American spouse and don't really acclimate to US culture. Many have no friends except those from their native lands. Sure, they may have seen more than tuk-tuks and water buffaloes, but that is about the limit of their awareness. My Thai wife is with me in states. So, those are the Thai people we know, along with internationally-located Thai-farang friend couples. Not too necessary to speak Thai, although it is helpful. My original point being that on Thaivisa you hear some very colorful stories about some very colorful people. Such as the fellow who dumped his dying wife to be with a gambler. I just have not met any of these people on my visits to Thailand. There is also another Thailand as not described in these forums. If you read Thaivisa and see Thailand through Thaivisa eyes, you can get a very skewed view of the world of Thailand - not all of it applies to all of Thailand. At least on the general forums. Every forum is different, it seems. But the general forum threads, visa the links in the newsletter updates, provide for some funny and interesting reads. I might have lent it to her had she not threatened to have me bumped off a few months before, over an argument about money she said I owed her!.
