Billionaire wanted in Pongpat case 'may have fled to Canada'
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Billionaire businessman Nopporn Suppipat - wanted over the alleged abduction and intimidation of someone he owed Bt120 million to - may have travelled to Canada after hiding in Cambodia, a police source said yesterday.

The source, who is attached to a task force of senior detectives under the Metropolitan Police Bureau, based his speculation on Nopporn having a visa for Canada.

He did not provide any more details on Nopporn, president of Wind Energy Holding.

A senior investigator, Pol Maj-General Sombat Milinthajinda, believes Nopporn is still in Cambodia. He said his men had been in constant contact with Immigra-tion Police in a bid to arrest him if and when he returned to Thailand.

Phaichet Maytheesariyaphong, a suspect in a separate abduction case linked to a debt-collecting racket allegedly involving disgraced crime-buster Lt-General Pongpat Chayaphan, had his wife contact police yesterday to negotiate his surrender - a process that was continuing yesterday.

Nopporn, along with 10 other suspects, has been accused of abducting and forcing a business associate of his to lower the Bt120-million debt he owed him to Bt20 million.

Phaichet, the concessionaire for city bus No 8, and six others allegedly abducted and intimidated a man who owed Bt30 million.

Nine people involved in Nopporn's alleged crimes, which come under the jurisdiction of Wat Phaya Krai police, have been arrested, while five involved in Phaichet's case, which is being handled by Phra Khanong police, are in custody.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt-General Sriwara Rangsipramanakul has reportedly instructed both stations to complete their investigation reports before Wednesday.

New details are emerging about another suspect in the Nopporn case who has been identified as Jeab, with a police sketch of the man being produced.

Police alleged that on June 23 Jeab drove a van containing many men to a condominium to meet Bunthit Chotewitthayasakul, the man Nopporn owed the money to, to force him to reduce the debt.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Remand Prison chief Aryut Sinthopphan said Pongpat was doing well and seemed to have adapted to life there.

Aryut said other jailed suspects connected with Pongpat who had been sick had recovered and were being held in the same cells.

"Meanwhile, Bangkok Remand Prison chief Aryut Sinthopphan said Pongpat was doing well and seemed to have adapted to life there." That's good to hear...considering he will be there for many years.

This reminds me of the scene in Goodfellas where they were bringing in the steaks, lobster and wine.

Unfortunately he'll probably be out in 2 or 3 years released quietly as he has powerful friends.

This goes' higher than him, I question if he is the top of the food chain here as he is the token lamb and will be looked after in prison and after, but as the cat is out of the bag, some one has to sacrificed, this follows as money flows up hill as s__t flows down hill.

As for the run away billionaire, well I wonder if he will be back before the statute of limitations runs out.

What I don't get is why these guy's don't have a run plan? a couple of fake pass ports and cash in several countries?

would not be surprised if he's hanging out with the red bull cop killer.

Are you sure? Maybe he plans to just hang out overs seas for a while until The statute if limitations expires...

Isn't that how it normally works?

May have run to Canada, Speculation and conjecture is the staple diet of this country. Either he is in Canada or he is not. Why don't they wit until they have something positive to say before going into print.

If he traveled there on a Thai passport simple have it revoked.

Why not revoke his passport and then you can track him and flush him out where you can send the dogs in to tree him. Is it possible that there are a few associates who want him out of the country and not subject to questioning?

Getting to be quite a list of Thai citizens who have abscounded and hold vast wealth/secrets for which they are not held accountable. I would wager they haqve/had common associoates in some cases and a common special warning system in many cases.

I'm sure that someone who amassed $ 800 in wealth would have come up with the idea to get himself

a second passport or a nationality for time like this...

Why announce he is on his way to Canada?

Why not just cancel his passport, have Canadans cancel his visa and then put out an arrest warant thru Interpol

and do all this without making it public? why give the runner and help in deciding where to go?

Oh ya ............. money and influence

If he ends up in Canada then it won't be easy getting him back to Thailand... it took more than ten years to get Saxena back. If Canada thinks there is a possibility Nopporn will face a certain charge on his return, as have some other suspects in related events, then I wouldn't bet on Canada being overly keen to assist.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the experience in prison for a man with access to money is totally different to that of a poor man. He can eat very well, have a spacious cell, he will have a telephone, alcohol and anything he needs... but he just won't be able to leave just yet. Once the sentence is out of the way, and the dust has settled he will be enjoying regular trips outside and eventually he will be out on parole well before the end of his sentence.

With regard to the education level here it could be a misunderstanding of English language, Canada and Cambodia sounds pretty similar for people here.

I just wonder if it is a task too tough for the cops to ask the Canadian embassy how many males in his age group applied for a visa in a certain time frame and the immigration for the names of those who actually arrived there. How about tracking him down by checking the air tickets? And what happened to Thailand's beautiful relation with Interpol?
