Work permits for foreign workers as regional headquarters of foreign firms doubled: Prayut

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said his government has facilitated convenience for foreign investors by raising the number of work permits at their regional headquarters from five to ten.

Speaking during his weekly TV programme, Prayut said the B.E. 2552 regulation of the Ministry of Labor’s Department of Employment has been amended.

"This is achieved by amending the on the approval of work by aliens, specifically the section on aliens working in regional operation headquarters (ROH). Previously, no more than 5 work permits may be issued for each ROH. The amendment increases this number to 10, with the option of requesting more permits as appropriate to the nature of the business," Prayut said.

He said if the ROHS have paid up to a certain level of income tax to the state during the past year, the government will also give special consideration regarding to their requests for work permits.

"We are also working to reduce the work permit issuing time to 1 working day. Channels for urgent reporting of workers, which may last no more than 5 days, have been added," Prayut said.

Change the 90 day reporting too. Not convenient when working remote

Just go to the post office and send in the needed documents you will have your 90 day paper in return in a few days.

Remote = offshore Thailand. Its rediculous, send passport back ashore, get passport sent back up to Bkk, stamped and brought back south, offshore again.

When reporting by mail you do not send your passport, you send copies.

Govt liason dept of my employer requires the passport. anyways, the 90 days goes too quick. and you cant cut a week or two short and go in early to BOI for a new stamp.

The 90 day reporting should be done online - enter passport number, country of issue, visa number, date of birth and name in passport along with physical address, phone number, and email address. If it matches the passport number, country, date of birth and name match then the information is updated and you get an email back with the confirmation details - if not then buzz try again or go to immigration and make sure the key data is corrected.

Is this true? Can we really report online? Do you have a link that you can share?

Many thanks.

This is well intentioned but I wonder how regional HQs there are in Thailand that can take advantage of this. Most companies that find it worth their while to locate a regional HQ in Thailand probably have one or more operating companies in Thailand which would get them more WPs, depending on their paid-up capital and number of Thai staff. For those large companies this will not be much of an issue. Small ones probably won't want 10 expats. I think the constraint of having a regional HQ in Thailand is more the shortage of local staff that communicate fluently in English and Chinese, rather than WPs.

I thought I read somewhere that 90 day reporting is to be abolished for those on non-immB visas and WPs and that WPs will normally be renewed for 2 years for everyone, rather than just for employees of large or public companies.
