Thai equivalent of these certain Japanese words

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I was wondering what best words to use when trying to find a comparison of the se two Japanese words/concepts

I cannot write Japanese nor Thai but the words in my closest spelling in English are:

Honae- the truth

Tatamai-the facade

The meanings/definitions are a bit more broad than what I have given but anyone familiar with these two concepts, a Thai equivalent would be great

well just guessing here but literally "the truth" is

ความจริง

khwaamM jingM noun a fact, the truth

but I think the context you are searching for is more fancy pancy maybe with some heavier kinda surreal or religious overtones eh?

a bit (20 seconds) of searching thai-language.com showed this word I never heard of but sounds awesome and cool

มายา maaM yaaM illusion; delusion; deception; fallacy

this word appears to be robbed from Pali. Sounds heavy. Get in the game!

Sorry I can't help with the Thai, but to explain the Japanese more:

HONNE

one's true feelings (which may or may not be acceptable to society).

TATEMAE

how one behaves or gives their opinions in public (sometimes hiding their true feelings, if they may be unacceptable to society, or the people they are dealing with).

Hope you are able to receive a good Thai definition.

Thanks mate I'm sure there is one on Thai, hopefully someone can help...

Honne and tatemae are very Japanese concepts so there's not going to be any single word in Thai for either of them. For honne, Google Translate gives ความตั้งใจจริง which I think is pretty good. But then it defines tatemae as ท่าทางสาธารณะ which will make no sense at all to most Thais. In cases like these you really have to explain the words rather than try to find a simple translation for them.

ความตั้งใจจริง almost like "true intentions" hmm cool
