PM confident Sydney hostage incident has 'no links to Thailand's security'

BANGKOK, 15 December 2014 (NNT) – The Thai Prime Minister has confirmed the hostage incident in Sydney has no effect on Thailand’s security as Thailand is not in direct conflicts with any countries.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha revealed he has already been reported by the Foreign Ministry about the incident, and officials are still checking whether there are any Thais among the hostages.

He stated that Thailand has a surveillance system that strictly monitors inbound and outbound visitors. The country is also in active coordination with security units in other countries and is able to ensure safety for tourists in Thailand.

Also, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his planned visit to Phang-nga Province on 26 December to take part in the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. He said he might have an opportunity to meet and discuss with rubber farmers in Phang-nga about the decreasing rubber prices.

He also vowed that his government gives the same priority to all farmers in addressing their plights, not only to rubber farmers.

Thai Consul suspends services following Sydney siege

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Consulate General in Sydney has suspended services at the recommendation of Australian government following the taking hostage of a number of hostages Monday morning inside a central Sydney cafe.

Footage shows an Islamist flag being held up to the window, Thai Consul General Teerathep Promvongsanon said Monday.

The Thai Foreign Ministry in Bangkok reported that the Australian government has asked local and foreign government offices as well as businesses in the area to close for one day for safety reasons.

The request was made after unidentified packages were found in several locations in Sydney.

Teerathep said the Thai Consulate General in Sydney also issued a warning to Thais to avoid the area and contact Thai communities and networks to suggest that Thais follow suggestions by the local government and authorities.

It is estimated that there are about 20,000 Thais in Sydney.

At one time I worked in a state psychiatric hospital. Most of my patients' ramblings made more sense than this.blink.png

The lack of communication skills in the present 'leadership' is indeed cataclysmic... What you write is, alas, quite close to the truth. Oh, Thailand!

BANGKOK, Dec 15 -- Thailand's consulate-general in Sydney warned Thai nationals to avoid travel to Sydney, while Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered the country's security authorities to follow up the hostage drama in Australia.

The consulate-general announced that this morning two armed men who covered their faces held about 20 people hostage at the Martin Place branch of Lindt Cafe in the heart of Sydney.

Australian police evacuated the vicinity and were handling the situation.

The consulate-general warned Thai people to refrain from visiting the area and leave the center of Sydney because there were bomb threats at many locations there.

Thai consul-general to Sydney Teerathep Promvongsanon said the hostage takers raised black flags with a white inscription in Arabic.

New South Wales police do not think the hostage takers are members of the Islamic State movement but assumed they represented the Shahada group which also supports a militant Jihad movement.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and other authorities told the Australian public not to panic as police put such situations under control and are trying to negotiate.

Mr Teerathep said the Thai consulate-general was advised to close today.

It was reported that Australian authorities told the Thai consulate-general and other nearby government offices to close today for safety.

Gen Prayut said he ordered security authorities to follow up the hostage situation and find out if any Thais were among those being held.

"The situation is a matter [for the] world powers and does not concern Thailand. So I do not want to speak of it much in a way that may affect the country," the prime minister said.

Gen Prayut said Thai authorities were carefully checking suspects who were passing through the country.

He asked general people to report information regarding any security suspects. He also denied that his own children were in Australia. (MCOT online news)
