Thai PM opens ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting

BANGKOK, 15 December 2014 (NNT) – The Prime Minister of Thailand has stated the key principles in dealing with the Ebola outbreak is to be ‘alerted but not panicked’ at the ASEAN Health Ministers’ Special Meeting.


The Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the opening ceremony of the ASEAN Health Ministers’ Special Meeting on Ebola Preparedness and Response at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, Bangkok.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN and the Public Health Ministers of ASEAN+3 countries attended this event to discuss the preparation and prevention in the case of an Ebola outbreak.

The Prime Minister has pointed that the main principles in dealing with the Ebola outbreak are to be 'alerted but not panicked' and to inform the public, prepare for prevention and warning systems in advance, have the working system of information exchange, and to increase the capability of healthcare services.

He has said that even though the South-East Asia region is located far from the main outbreak in West Africa, the region should still be cautious well prepared for the situation.

The main authority dealing with this issue in Thailand is the Ministry of Public Health which will provide the monitoring services and communicate to the public with factual information, said the Prime Minister.

He has also stated that this meeting is an important chance for ASEAN countries along with China, Japan, and South Korea to encourage regional cooperation to solve the issue and gain regional public trust.

The Prime Minister has expressed his gratitude to healthcare workers worldwide who have nobly devoted themselves to work in the infected area.

He also commented that the fundamental healthcare structure and the Health Security would help prevent, diagnose, and suppress the outbreak, of which Thailand is willing to support this subject through the ASEAN+3 Health Security Network and the exchange of knowledge in the Health Security development.

Medical experts from 13 countries in Bangkok to discuss Ebola

BANGKOK, Dec 15 -- Some 50 medical experts from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus China, Japan and South Korea gathered in Bangkok yesterday and today to draft an effective policy to fight the deadly Ebola disease in the region.

At the ASEAN Plus Three Health Ministers’ Special Meeting on Ebola Preparedness and Response, they will also voice their support on ongoing international responses to the disease outbreaks in West Africa as well as in other affected countries during the two-day meeting being here.

Dr Suriya Wongkongkathep, deputy permanent secretary for Thailand’s Public Health Ministry, told journalists that the objectives of the meeting are to review and follow-up actions taken against Ebola in this region.

Dr Keiji Fukuda of the World Health Organisation will present the report on preparations made against the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa and in other affected countries.

Another expert, Dr Tom Frieden, director of the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, informed the participants on measures to control the disease and vaccines used to battle it.

Dr Kamnuan Ungchusak of Thailand’s Disease Control Department will report on close monitoring and preparations mapped out for Ebola in the ASEAN region.

The joint agreement to be made by the medical experts from the 13 countries will be given to public health ministers for consideration and approval today.

Actions to be adopted by the 13 Asian countries will at least provide safety from Ebola to more than two billion people living in the region. (MCOT online news)
