On Tuesday night I sent to my Thai bank 1150 AUD. Then paid $20 to St George for the priviledge and when it arrived Kasikorn deducted their 203baht.

So my 1170 transaction, minus the 203 baht netted me 29,974 Baht which exchanges into real terms a rate of 25.79 baht.

Using the exchange rate from BahtSmart for the a Wednesday Transfer and the exchange rate of 25.76, my 1170 would netted me 30,139 baht, then deduct Kasikorns 203 = 29,936.

I am 38 baht better off doing by TT as I always do.

Having said that, I am sick of the banks and the way they have sucked my dry over the years with their fees and interest rates. For 38 Baht I will be giving my business in future to someone who is trying to do something other than bleed me of every cent.

When I first came here over 2 years ago I transferred all my monies through my bank as Baht, not AUD and they never advised me that I could send AUD. They made plenty out of me. No more.

Hi Wonder 6281

No charge on the Thai side for us. So you would have been 203- 38 baht = 165 baht better off with us.

I know its not alot, but every baht counts.

You will also see us sharpen our pricing in the coming weeks, now we have hardened our systems and processes. Giving you more money in your pocket. I'll let everyone know middle of next week what our new pricing will look like.

I sent money last night with OZFOREX, I got 26.30B exchange rate and BKK Bank will take out 200B when it arrives here. I paid $15. fee to OZFOREX.

I have been using OZFOREX for 3 years. On 22nd December I transfered funds and they didnt get into my BKK Bank A/C until 29 Dec.

Being unhappy with the length of time for this transaction I wrote to OZFOREX and here is the reply I received this morning.

Hi XXXXXXX,

Thank you for your email.

Your last transfer was booked on December 22nd which is a National Thai bank holiday and then there was Christmas, Boxing day and also the 31st which is also National holiday in Thailand.

I am afraid there is no way to speed standard Thai clearing times.

I would recommend to use a cash provider such as MoneyGram in the future should you need this transfers to be quicker.

Best Regards,

Mary Bali | Foreign Exchange Dealer | OzForex

As you can imagine I was not impressed with their response,

1st The 22nd of Dec was not a Bank holiday in Thailand and neither was Xmas Day & Boxing day, the 31st she talks about has got nothing to do with it as my funds arrived on the 29th.

This woman has just tried to fluff me off with a line of total B/S.

I am taking this further.

So Mr BahtSmart how long would your company take to do this transfer?

Hi Jessi

If I was the boss of Ozforex I wouldn't be happy with that answer. 22nd Dec was a working day in Thailand.

For Bahtsmart our simple answer is we process when the banks are open. If you booked a trade with us on 22nd Dec and we received your funds in our ANZ bank account on 22nd Dec, worst case it would be in your Thai bank account on 23rd Dec.

Cheers

I wished to transfer A$2500 to my Bangkok Bank account in Thailand.

I divided it into two lots of A$1250 and set up the transfer one with BahtSmart and one with CBA. I did this on Sunday. The CBA charged A$22 for the obverseas transfer and no fee to transfer to BahtSmart Perth WA.

At 8.01 am I received a message from BahtSmart that they had received the funds.

These are the entries in my Bangkok Bank Passbook.

I'm unsure on which received baht amount was from CBA and BahtSmart. Maybe the first one (the 32,652.15) was the BahtSmart amount since it has Smart in the passbook entry and the other one was CBA. I just want to be sure.

1/2 baht difference per 1AUD. Interestingly you received funds early Monday morning. I usually get mine after lunch the next day. I would assume if you sent them both at the same time and they hit the system at the same time then the rate should be similar. But 1/2 Baht difference within 5 hours?

The CBA transfer arrived at 8.58am. I sent Australian dollars from the CBA to my Bangkok Bank account. The Thai Bank converted it to Thai Baht. They would have charged a fee but took it from the funds before depositing them to my account.

It is the second one listed and is the higher amount. You need to convert the A$22 CBA fee to baht and take that from their result.

BahtSmart did not charge me any fees that I can see. The funds via them arrived at 14.02pm and is the first one listed. They started at 8.01AM when they received the funds from me but the CBA would probably have sent via Sydney and probably had a few hours advantage.

I set it up Sunday the 11th so both the CBA and BahtSmart could not activate until Monday morning, giving in my mind at least a fair comparison on the timing.

In regards to timing I think BahtSmart have done well. The CBA does not consistently arrive so quickly but has always been same day.

Using the amount of A$1250 favours BahtSmart as when the amount is higher, say double, the effect of the Fees on CBA transfer is less.

Moral of the story is to send larger amounts maybe less frequently reducing the effect of the fee structure. BahtSmart don't have any fees as they say.

To me this implies the BahtSmart transfer gave you the most baht, but it gave around 632 baht less. Deconfuse me...maybe I'm just reading everything wrong.

Yes BahtSmart were 632 baht less deposited to the passbook, but I had paid a separate fee of A$22 to CBA for their overseas transfer.

If you convert that A$22 to Baht that works out at about 580 baht. That reduces the CBA win to 52 baht.

My point about sending higher amounts is that if I had sent the whole 2500 by CBA I would have been 632 + 52 baht better off.

I was trying to be subtle in my last line.

I suppose a better way of doing it would have been to take the CBA fee off the 1250 and send that amount with the CBA but the whole 1250 with BahtSmart.

That would have shown the passbook entries as correct without requiring adjustment.

BahtSmart don't have any fees they say and with smaller amounts should be the better deal, but for higher amounts the fee remains fixed so its impact is less and the CBA would be the better way.

A Note. BahtSmart are converting in Australia and in the CBA deal the Thai Bank converts it.

Hi Nuddy

Thanks for using our service. You have highlighted a number of great points:

1) our service is better for smaller amounts definitely, but on larger amounts we need to work on our pricing. We have some software developments in the pipeline which should be ready end of Q1 2015 which will allow us to much more competitive on larger sizes.

2) Please be careful paying larger amounts less frequently. You will open yourself up to FX risk. As we are all painfully aware the AUD has depreciated roughly 10%-12% against the THB since July last year when it peaked at around 30.7.

3) if you guys do have a very large amount contact us directly. We get volume discounts with our suppliers which mean we can get better than the Thai bank retail rates.

4) Now we have been open a little over a month and have bedded in our systems and processes, we will be improving our pricing in the next week. I'll update this channel when we are ready to announce.

Again thanks for your business and hope we can be of service again in the future.

Also, XWing has a fast transfer too.

On Friday 16th I completed a $5,000.00 transfer using the CBA system I've used for years. I note in the past the transfer took a day or so to appear, now it's hours or less.

About 09:00 I checked rates Baht to AUD then triggered the transfer:-
EX.net = 26.902
BahtSmart = 25.987

At 10:35 the deposit is lodged into my Thai Bank.
130,579.58 Baht = 26.116 NETT

I read now where they are fine tuning but, IMHO, BahtSmart still has a little work to do yet.

Hi bdenner,

I am sorry that we didn't win your business that day.. I have to apologise it was our fault. We have been testing our system "panic mode" functionality each early morning Australian time for 2 hours. This function allows us to spread the price very wide very quickly just in case there is some turmoil in the marketplace i.e if a Swiss Central bank problem ever happened in Australia..

We are no longer doing that each morning and you will find our prices are now consistently better. For example xe.com is now:26.7454 and bahtsmarts rate is 25.9876

1.00 AUD = 26.7454 THB Australian Dollar Thai Baht 1 AUD = 26.7454 THB 1 THB = 0.0373896 AUD

Thanks

Hi

It seems the money changers had a special rate on the weekend. I suppose this is because they are a cash based business and have alot of people walk in off the street on the weekend in Thaitown, Sydney. I'm not interested in one off specials,. I am interested in delivering a quality online and convenient product at consistently the best rates. I think if you check us against the money changers again today you will find our rate is better.

Give us a try, transfer from as little as AUD100..with no fees and charges.. all online.

The CBA would have charged you a fee of $22, should we reduce the amount credited to your Thai Bank account by the equivalent of A$22 to give a fair comparison to what BahtSmart result would have been.

I like many on here are just trying to find the most consistent way of transferring the funds so therefore a fair comparison with BahtSmart is necessary as they are advertising no fees. Let us know

Also pls note for some reason Bank of QLD takes a day or more to arrive..Not sure why we have asked and waiting their answer.

I have access to a business related foreign exchange account, with the CBA, with an annual one off fee, it is normally used to pay our US and European suppliers. Fees are very much less than the individual direct approach. BUT, YES, you are correct others should take the CBA fee into account.

Using a special commercial rate is hardly a fair comparison.

CBA charges me AUD22 + AUD 60 to Citibank NY to sent the 8 digits + SWIFT number <deleted>!

It's cheaper to withdraw from a foreign ATM!

Hey Look I have no connection to BahtSmart other than I wrote on here and I used them once as an example in my post above.

However I think everyone has to be fair about this.

bdenner has quoted he did better but really he got a stubby of beer in front and cheated in his comparison.

Here is his detail "have access to a business related foreign exchange account, with the CBA, with an annual one off fee, it is normally used to pay our US and European suppliers. Fees are very much less than the individual direct approach. BUT, YES, you are correct others should take the CBA fee into account."

So not only did he Fail to disclose he had a fee to take off but he failed to disclose that he was a business competitor of BahtSmart, in effect!

I straight out call you as an not a true comparison bdenner haha I was going to use another word and you deserve it.

Obviously with your special connections you won't ever use Baht Smart so I consider anything you say about them disqualified on the grounds of you being a .....!

Posted

By crikey I am becoming obsessed with this topic but continually players add in stuff thats not correct, does not include/exclude fees and so on and the issue gets clouded.

The latest one was bdenner who had a commercial advantage and chose not to disclose that in his comparison. Shame on you.

I want to examine bdenner transaction. He got 26,116 to his bank account but forgot (conveniently) the A$22 fee. Using the same rate we get A$22 x 26.116 = 574 baht

He got 130,579.58 in his account

Less the fee he forgot converted above 574

= Equals the true comparison fiqire of 130,005.58 Now we are cooking with gas

Now what was that rate he got from BahtSmart hmmmm 25.987 I wonder what that works out at.

A bit of a conversion of 5k aussie no fees gives 129,935

Now that will give us the difference of 70 baht

Hey hey a guy with a commercial advantage non disclosing fees bashed the opposition on a A$5000 transaction by winning at the all time record of 70 Baht.

Hey give me a break here

If players are going to do comparisons then do them fairly and whilst 70 baht is a win but fuk thats slim in this case.

I congratulate BahtSmart for getting close to their opposition based only on a QUOTE by BahtSmart and not a transaction.

bedsore should buy us all a beer
