Do I Need to Cancel My ED Visa?

Featured Replies

I obtained my new ED visa (3rd year) in October from Laos and i'm due to have my 90 day extension on January 4th. But I have decided to leave the country and take up a job offer in Australia.

I will be leaving on either the 6th or 7th of January, and will then only come back to Thailand to visit from time to time.

Do I need to cancel my ED visa? If so, should I get a letter from the school stating I want to cancel, or should I just tell them at immigration when I go for my extension before the 4th.

Do i actually need to attend the extension on the 4th, or can i just cancel at the airport when leaving the country?

Happy Christmas to all on TV!.

Thanks,

Paul

You are not on an extension of stay, so do not have to extend. But you cannot stay longer than the permission to stay stamped in your passport. I assume this is the 4th of January. If you leave on or before that date no extension is needed and you just leave.

As you leave on the 6th or 7th it means you will be on overstay. You can visit immigration to get an additional 7 days for 1,900 baht. A letter from your school stating you will stop your course on the 4th might come in handy.

If your current extension runs out on the 4th and you leave after that you would be on overstay.

You could get a 7 day extension but would need a letter stating you are longer going to be attending classes after the 4th to cancel your extension.

If you were to leave before your extension ends you could just leave since you will be leaving at the airport.

Thanks for the fast reply Mario.

Yes, my reporting date is the 4th January. Given that this is a Sunday, do you know if immigration in Jomtien will be open on Friday 2nd? If not, what are my options for dates? If i am to get an additional 7 days, I would have either the 31st December (if i leave on the 6th Jan), but is immigration open then?

Thanks again,

Paul

Immigration will be closed from the 31st to the 4th.

If you go on the 30th the 7 days would start on the 4th.
