100% correct its the only way that these people might take notice of right or wrong,the amount of accidents and deaths through bad driving,for more than one reason is enough to make us all sick.They should clamp down a lot harder,but its a start,hit them hard in the pocket,and put limiters on all commercial vehicles,especially buses,large and small.ban the use of remoulds especially on the front axels.Clamp down hard not just the drivers but the owners,park everyone of them up when stopped with defects,and do not allow back on the road without MOT clearance,and jail the ones who fail to comply AND revoke both the driver and company licences,ie,operators licence and drivers licence.Until this matter is taken seriously there will be continues untold deaths on the roads,the sad part of this is,most of the deaths are innocent passengers and other road users trying to do the right thing.The inside overtaker should be banned immediately,and the fast lane sleeper the same treatment for him,equally they are to blame for a large amount of death crashes,total disregard for life and other road users.As an x HGV heavy truck driver with 50+ years experience on many continents im sure Thailand is definately the most backward country regarding road rules and regulations and disregard for other users I have ever encountered.We all know it starts at the top,Money is the only rule here,greed breeds many things,right and wrong and vice a versa depending how much money you have,so we have to hope it changes for the future and the better.

IT IS, and has been a law for a long time in Thailand that wearing sandals or flips to drive is illegal. And rightly so...... as most Thais drive automatics.. moving 1 foot to accelerate and break. It is very easy for a sandal to slip or move or get caught underneath either pedal. As for barefoot, I have no idea, it's not covered, as most barefoot people can't afford a bike, let alone a car or lorry.

bare feet are safe or proper fitted shoes that cannot move about.

That does include thongs(jandles) as unsafe.

Better guess is that the driver was rude.

Lace up or boots should be worn when driving. Sandals slip off and get tangled in the pedals. I have had that happen to me and never wore sandals while driving again.

Here up north in Phitsanulok the well dressed local bus drivers often take off their shoes and drive barefoot; - Possibly to get a better feel for the mechanicals of the "ancient" buses that they so expertly drive!

I have always driven bare footed both here and back home. I'm talking about longer trips and not the short daily commute to work. Gives you a much greater sense of feel/control through the pedals. Guessing most of the negative comments are coming from the guys on here who come from the cooler parts of the planet.

For commercial drivers there are definitely rules about foot wear. And here in Thailand you can see that all bus and taxi drivers are wearing a shirt or at least keep one in the car to put on.

As far as I know you must have proper shoes, sandals with heel strap or being bare foot in most European countries while driving because of the risk of getting a sandal getting stuck behind/under the pedals... I myself got a cloog stuck under the brake when I was younger(I had just got my licence), thank god that the parking break worked

I don't like sandals,flip flops,and these grotesque crocks are even worse.I believe bare feet look better than those I've just mentioned.As far as driving,none of those are any good as far as I'm concerned.Get A decent pair of shoes.

Heh! That bus puts me in mind of the customised scooters the mods used to tool about on in 60s UK. Cool or what!

Back in the 70s, when I lived in Aus, I drove semis interstate for some years, and most of the year my attire was shorts, singlet and flip-flops (thongs in aussiespeak). It was simply the most comfortable way to dress when you spent most of your waking hours behind the wheel. Air-conditioned trucks were a rarity in those days, and the Kenworth I drove would get like an oven in the summer. Long trousers? Collared shirt? Proper shoes and socks? Only the guys who drove for Ansett dressed like that (company rules), and they had air-con cabs.

This is pretty amazing, even for Thailand since I routinely see cement truck drivers, stake bed drivers, and all sorts of large vehicles drivers wearing simple flip flop sandals

Did you actually bother to check the 1979 (Motor) Vehicle Act before making that claim?

The act (in English) is available on the Web, and it does not contain any reference to shoes, footwear, clothes or other attire!

Neither does the related Land Traffic Act (1979).

I wear Crocs around the garden and on the beach. What's wrong with that? I'm 80+ but I haven't given up on life. I have given up though on people who make idiotic statements. Unless of course I miss your sarcasm?

Exactly- You are eighty and 'comfy clothes' are to excused. But Crocs, Flip Flops, Singlets, sweats, onesies, etc on younger people indicate people who take no pride in their appearance and dress in the cheapest, most functional minimal way and this often reflects on their attitude and behaviour. Unpressed clothes and unshined dirty shoes. Really low class dress which is rarely seen amongst genuine poor people.
