SURIN - A Japanese man has been named the winner of the 2014 annual eel catching contest in Surin province.

Ten contestants from various countries such as China, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom competed with each other in the 17th Eel Catching Tournament organised by Surin provincial administration in Chumpolburi district yesterday.

The tournament is a homage to local farmers' tradition and involves the contestants searching for eels in a ditch for five minutes. The contestant who managed to catch the biggest number of eels and successfully placed the slippery creatures in a bamboo-weaved basket wins the contest.

This news made my day.

Even though there is something missing like: TAT expect 100.000 tourists from Japan to visit Thailand to participate in next years event.

Are we THAT desperate for news or is this comedy?

Perhaps they should have real news.....like a bunch of people chasing cheese downhill.

Surin is a good province. People are nice there. It was known as the poorest province for years. They have alot of Khmer dialect but the people are down to earth. Please don't knock what you don't know. Just go with the flow.

Hey, lighten up. It's a bit of an interest story & helps promote the local region. Good for them.

Cheers..... Mal.

Is that your opinion as a Farang?

I have lived around that area for nearly 10 years and have experienced a different opinion when you speak to Thais from neighbouring provinces about the inhabitants of Surin.
