texanaust
In the last few days, I have observed a noticable decline in the number of chairs and umbrellas on the beach along Jomtien Beach Rd (Southern End). There are now sandy gaps between vendors in certain areas and some vendors this morning were taking umbrellas away in their pickups. Has someone cracked down on these businesses or am I imagining these new sandy gaps? Less Russians too.
giddyup
Probably not enough customers to warrant putting them all up. I was there a couple of weeks ago with a few people and there were a few of other tables occupied, but not many.

I was there a couple of weeks ago with a few people and there were a few of other tables occupied, but not many. Since when did not enough customers deter them from putting up rows ands rows of hideous chairs and umbrellas destroying an otherwise quite attractive seaview. Not Jomtien admittedly but I used to walk the length of beach road in Pattaya every day and virtually every inch of beach was covered with the things though I rarely saw more than 2 or 3 customers sitting under them at any one of the vendors pitches.

ToddinChonburi
I went for a drive along the beach in Bang Saen and could not see the water from all the umbrellas. what a joke.

Popular Post CarlTyson
Thais will set up all their umbrellas so a tourists cannot enjoy the beach. Must pay! They turned a nice coastline into a shanty town slum. Get rid of all of them and their makeshift kitchens etc. It's ugly and they exploit the beach. There should be some umbrella rental shops, across the road and to be set up only when a tourist requests it.
Tony M
As I understand it, and I have no confirmation, the beach concessions are now back where they were originally, many years ago. They have "spread out" over time, and filled up the gaps that were originally there when the concessions were granted. If you walk along Jomtien Beach, you can ( at the moment) see where City hall recently re-pegged out the official concessions ( with one metre between each concession) again. How long the pegs will remain in place, who knows ? In addition, the concession holders were told that all chairs, umbrellas, etc must be removed every evening, and that Wednesdays on the beach will be chair and umbrella free after January 1st. We'll see !

craigt3365
Several months ago I was walking along Dongtan beach and there were 2 trucks filled with well dressed officials, some with civilian clothes and some wearing some sort of uniform. They were going from vendor to vendor and the discussions didn't look like they were being well received. From my understanding, they were measuring the layouts and I guess getting them to comply with the width and length requirements. Maybe this is the result of that process???? CarlTyson
Crooked City and Police have illegally sold or leased the beach to these umbrella vendors. These vendors that are being evicted must be livid with the City & Police that took their money. Good. Let the fun begin. Lawsuits, revenge, arrests, paybacks, etc.
Popular Post ThaiBob
The views expressed here are contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of tourists and many farang residents like myself. I sit with friends and like the European style of beaches with chairs, umbrellas and full service. We order lunches from the concessionaires and buy fruit, chicken, Seafood from the passing vendors. This is what the majority of tourists want and the proposed changes are ludicrous. Farangs are signing petitions against the changes and being asked to call 1337 to protest. Closing the beach for a cleaning one day a week? Dumb, dumb, dumb. I would be pissed traveling half way around the world for a few days in Pattaya and finding the beach closed. Btw, the concessionaires are licensed annually by the City, have no formal leases, but the licenses are transferable. Recently during this peak season more chairs are added as needed to meet the demand. There are currently 70 people sitting in our section. I I wouldn't go as far as to call them european style beaches, in europe the chairs and umbrellas are stacked away and only put up when a customer wishes to rent them. This way the beaches are left spacious for those who wish to use them without shade, to actually sunbathe. As for the hawkers who trade illegally trying to sell you watches, jewellery, belts, ornaments, tattoos, bed spreads, etc, etc, they don't even give you 5mins rest before the next one arrives!

That's what tourists are expecting. I know when I first saw the slummy, umbrella vendor shanty towns I was disappointed they commandeered the entire beach. UGLY! Today, I drove along Jomtien Beach and the new open spaces are packed with tourists, sitting on towels and enjoying the beach as it should be. Besides, I would never sit in those beach chairs. They are stacked up against trees at night and all the stray dogs, rats & drunks piss all over them. YUK!.

ThaiBob
With the ridicolous prices they charge at the beach umbrellas/chairs: the less the better! Now that was funny, a tourist travels half way around the world and can't afford the ridiculous price of 30 baht for a chair? Most pay the 100 baht for the white beds. Only a retired person like me is too cheap and opts for the 30=baht chair.
craigt3365
I think the problem is the vendors have encroached into open spaces and are harassing visitors who just want to sit on the beach with a towel. There should be room for both. I love the chairs and have used them many times. But many times, I'm down to the beach with my own chairs, my own food, and my own good bottle of wine. I don't need to be harassed. Plus, I like my chairs better! LOL

My condo is directly opposite one of the open areas on Jomtien Beach. The space is used primarily by Thais who cannot afford the chairs and by farang sun worshippers who don't want protection from sun or the services the concessionaires provide. The vendors do not harass these people(unlike the Koh Larn story). The beach is big enough for everybody but if there was not a demand for the concessions they would not exist, that is an economic reality. Popular Post lonewolf99
NIMBY.....Not In My Back Yard.....Nimbies think they own a view or have the right to control what goes on around them. All well and good if you own the land. But, I would hazard a guess and say that no Thais are on this forum saying get rid of the brollies. This Is Thailand TIT as we all know. They local populus love these hideous eyesores. Coz they hate the sun making them look like pennyless poor farmers.... Much better to avoid it and clap on lotions and potions that make your arm pits whiter then white!!! Then sit fully clothed in near darkness under a beach brollie on what I consider one of the most uncofortable chairs you would ever try to sit into or try to rise out of. They also cut off the circulation in your legs and at the end of the day you have to pay for this..! The vast majority of land locked tourists who come to Jomtien have never seen a "proper" Beach. This includes Thais as well as foreigners. Try Australia for beaches. Miles of soft sand and the only brollies are brought along by the visitor themselves. If any one thinks 20 mtrs of builders sand, mixed with dog ends, dog turds and a "Short chop" surf. Polluted by road drain run off, condoms, panty liners, billions of plastic bags and poly food boxes is a beach. Well sadly, they are very much mistaken. Those making that mistake are of course many land locked former soviet block people. Who like to get on the bits of the beach without the brollies to bake themselves red for 2 weeks. The numbers of those will decline dramatically over the next few weeks. For me the best beaches I have seen in the LoS are south of Hua Hin. Miles of deserted beaches, and most off the beaten track. With a scattering of resorts and eating places. Making a day at the beach what it should be. But...another bit of Thai strangeness...."No one go there then it not good place to go.....!!! Love it. And one other thing...no one should own what nature put there. It should be for everyone to enjoy and not be exploited for greed. for real
It is a pity that the English system for beach chairs is not used. The beach is open for everybody .If you want a chair you pay but when you leave the vendor must collect and only rent to a customer. Should you leave the beach the chair can be used for free by anybody if uncollected. Edited January 1, 2015 by for real

lou62
Noticed this myself cycling down the beach road in Jomtien, plenty of chairs etc if you want them, but larger areas with people lying on towels and very much like a beach environment you'd expect. The rates are regulated by the City. 30 baht for the wooden/canvas chairs and 100 baht for white chaise loungers. The chairs are often grouped in pairs so if you put something in the the chair next to you, like I do, you could be charged more. And yes there have been reports of overcharging along Pattaya Beach Road near Central during the peak season.
