Clash leaves one RKK terrorist dead

BANGKOK: -- One RKK militant was killed in a clash with government soldiers in Ra-ngae district of Narathiwat province Wednesday morning.

The clash broke out 6.00 am today when a combined force of soldiers and rangers encircled a jungle camp of the militants atop Mortae hill in Tambon Chalerm of Rangae district following tipoff from villagers that a group of 5-6 armed militants was holing in the hill camp to plan terror attack during the New Year.

As the soldiers were approaching their camp, they were fired upon fiercely.

In a gun battle that last 10 minutes later, the militants fled.

A search of the area found one dead RKK militant with a M 16 assault rifle, a pistol and two hand grenades in his possession.

Col Pasit Charnleka, commander of the 45th Ranger Regiment, said the camp was served as the command base of the RKK militants, comprising of seven houses.

"In a gun battle that last 10 minutes later, the militants fled."

This happens every single time. Do the Thai Army actually have any tactics, or do they all just dismount from the pickup and head for the front gate ?.

So there are 5 armed terrorists longing to go see Allah free in Thailand. Watch this space to see how many they kill.

Presumably less than 6 would kill.

Agree. It`s sooo frustrating that after a decade of fighting the terrorists in the South the Thai military doesn`t seem to learn from previous mistakes when it comes to the tactics they deploy. How many times have they "encircled" a terorist camp or a house, only for most of the suspect to flee ??

Should have called in an air strike. Napalm would work

Agree with all former comments ... except the cruel Napalm shit (the writer must be a frustrated US soldier who tried to fight in Vietnam).

Should we change the name to the Monday Morning Quarter Back Armchair Generals' Forum?

Napalm's too nasty, perhaps a Tank Regiment, or a Wing of Helicopter Gunships? Do helicopter gunships have wings? Jeez, a few dozen B52's could have carpet=bombed the whole bloody district - I'm sure the Yanks would oblige.

Instead Col Prasit used the Rangers available, killed 1 RKKAH, possibly wounded and at least demoralised those who escaped, destroyed a base, captured any equipment they were forced to abandon, and likely gained valuable intel.

And apparently without casualties.

Maybe when they dismount it counts as a covert approach, when they drive up to the gate then its overt.

A fair point. After all none of us were there, and those of us who may have done this sort of thing haven't done so for a long time.

Mind you rather than tanks, helicopter gunships or B52s, maybe a little cordon might have improved the result?

Hey, I've mastered the multiquote button!!!
