Poll reveals top news items of the year

BANGKOK: -- In a Suan Dusit Poll, 86.58 per cent of the respondents found the May 22 military takeover the most outstanding news of the year, while the arrest of former Central Investigation Bureau chief Pongpat Chayaphan and his network was named the top social news item at 69.45 per cent.

The murders of two Britons on Surat Thani's Koh Tao topped the list of crime news at 59.13 per cent.

The results of the survey of 3,479 people conducted nationwide from December 20 to 30 were released yesterday.

The top business news was the rising cost of living at 95.31 per cent, while the top education news title went to the embezzlement of Bt1.6 billion from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang (59.59 per cent).

The top sports news was the national soccer team winning the AFF Suzuki Cup (92.44 per cent) and the top entertainment news was the break-up of Samut Prakan politician Chonsawat Asavahame and actress Janie Tienphosuwan (82.47 per cent).

In the public-health category, the winner was the Ebola outbreak in Africa (55.68 per cent), and most gripping foreign news was the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 (52.66 per cent)

At least one of the top stories of the year was a good story, if you like sports

Other than that was a pretty grim year all around, with promise of more of the same

The only thing that ever changes in Thailand is the calendar
