You have listed out some negative points that do not all reflect the masses. I personally think Thailand is waiting for online shopping more, I see more and more good online stores/businesses popping up now such as food panda, lazada, home pro online etc and over the next 5 years or so ecommerce in my view will be massive in Thailand. The protectionist policy in Thailand is the only thing holding it back. There is nothing wrong with the education system - no more than anywhere else, anyway. Yes corruption is a problem here, but that would be swept away if foreign firms were given free access to the markets and workforce. The difference between Japan (which pre-WW2 was even more insular than Thailand) and here is that losing the war forced Japan to open their economy to foreign investment, and with that came innovation and progress. In Thailand, the Big Beasts are desperate to continue their hegemony, and in doing so are holding the country back. Only when Thailand accepts that we have an open global economy where hard work and innovation are rewarded with success will they escape the anachronistic feudal system that pertains. I disagree with you a little, about the 30-40yr bit...Most Professionals are completely up to date with their profession when they retire... They leave their industry (whatever it is) and take that valuable knowledge with them. It is lost forever. This experience has taught them to overcome a problem. Some dont want to retire, but because of their age, they are forced to, in western countries. So thats a gift to countries who pick up that expertise, and take advantage of it.
