Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul said Thursday that John Mark Karr was regarded as an "undesirable person" because he was accused of committing a crime in the United States and thus his visa has been revoked.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 42-year-old American was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

But Suwat, who heads the country's immigration police, said he was unaware of any criminal charges facing the suspect in Thailand.

"When we informed him that he has been accused of committing a crime at home he denied all accusations," said another senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak with reporters.

Suwat said Thai police investigated the Karr who has been in Thailand four times over the past two years and made the arrest at the request of U.S. counterparts.

Let's not confuse the issue here. we have folks grouping this in with the masses of pedos that exist in the world. This is another universe intirely so let's not put this in there. We are talking about a brutal, calculated, cold blooded murder of a 6 year old girl. No need to talk about this murderer in the same breath as ordinary pedos; he does not deserve to be raised up to that level. This was a gruesome homicide

I completely agree that this is a horrendous murder but it's imposssible to call the arrested man a murderer before he has been tried...I was referring to the fact that he is wanted on other sex-related charges..

Hey

The late night ABC News has just said that the suspect is being held by FBI Agents in Thailand awaiting the arrival of US Marshalls who will facilitate his extradition.

Apparently he gave details nor previously released by the authorities to a person he was communicating with back in Boulder CO.

There is a Special Report on Nightline on ABC tonight with Barbara Walters, who had previously interviewed both John & Patsy Ramsey.

Kind regards

Peter

Does Thailand have and FBI?

If not what authority do they have to hold him. Or is it just bad reporting again.

After saying that "if" he is guilty I don't care who detains him.

This case seems to have a history of ruining peoples lives. Let him have his day in court before another witch hunt starts.

Before I saw ur sig. I was thinking...... jail can't be that bad in Thailand anymore if they give you internet access.

If this guy proves to be guilty, of course, it is good news.

However, have people picked up how the US press (CNN) is characterizing THAILAND in this story.

"... arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, NOTORIOUS for its sex trade and child prostitution ... "

Personally, I find such a characterization vile and unbalanced. Assuming this is the real creep, the press should be thanking the Thai authorities for assisting in his arrest, not insulting the entire Thai nation with lurid, yellow journalism.

I am, however, wondering why so many fugitives end up in Thailand. Is it because fugitives just navigate in this direction or is it because Thailand does such a good job of catching them?

I wonder if it could be the way that Thailand is represented by the press?

This case still isn't a done deal.

They have some kind of confession done in Thailand (not under US law I would think), he has no criminal record or accusations in Thailand, he has no ties to Boulder Colorado (scene of the crime), and he has an alibi. So, look forward to high ratings for another "trial of the century" with lots more dragging Thailand through the mud.

It wasn't just that she was white and rich. It was more that the parents looked like the murderers and that the girl was an over-sexualized little girl beauty pageant contestant. Real life soap opera, and now ... a sequel.

Yes, this guy looks guilty, but do did the parents. At least in the US still, we still have presumption of innocence.

No its not Scampy. That was my idea of a joke. Sorry.

Nevertheless, the guy has got guilty written all over his face and should have his balls chopped off.

If JBR had been an ordinary looking kid from a racial minority, no American media would have been interested. Now that is true.

In unknown cases you are right but not in the Jonbenet case. This case is big time and media would be all over it no matter who done it

I think you got the wrong end of the stick , he didn't say anything about who did it but who the victim was.

Thhis news is not huge, this news is ENORMOUS. I am fairly certain that most non Americans that read this forum have no idea how big this is. This is almost as big as catching Bin Laden. It's amazing how many shady farangs I have seen in 5 years in BKK. I'm talking some really criminal looking folks: tattoos on hands, face, neck and head. It's almost like a cess pool where some of these people migrate to. I want to say that I am ecstatic over this development. I have followed this case closely for 9 1/2 years and was always appalled at how it remained unsolved.

This is big news but no where near catching OBL. What is sad is this case getting so much attention.

(though I agree there are a fare share of shady characters in LOS)

He was arrested in conjuction with FBI officers after being followed for three weeks as he sought a job teaching English in Bangkok.

"We arrested him yesterday at an apartment not far from my office after having followed him for 21 days," immigration police chief Lieutenant General Suwat Tumroungsiskul told Reuters

MSNBC said Karr had lived in Boulder at the time the child's body was found on December 26, 1996.

Suwat said he had arrived on his latest visit with a working visa issued in the United States and was looking for a job teaching English.

Suwat said he had revoked the Karr's visa, issued in the United States and allowing him to work in Thailand, giving him the status of a "person who could pose threat to the society" under Thai law.

"People like him are dangerous. We have criminals from all over the world running away from their home countries to look for teaching jobs in Thailand," he said.

=============================================================

His brother Nate Karr, speaking from their father's home in Atlanta said, "We're sure he's innocent. We heard that there's good DNA evidence. I hope they can test him as soon as possible so they can exonerate him. We're just positive he's innocent. This is ridiculous."

A source close to the investigation said Karr confessed to elements of the crime, according to The Associated Press. The AP also said a law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Karr had been communicating periodically with someone in Boulder who had been following the case and cooperating with law enforcement officials.

Nate Karr said his younger brother lived with grandparents in Alabama, where he went to high school and college and where he went on to become a teacher.

Bravell Jackson, superintendant of Marion County Schools in Alabama, said he knew Carr as a young boy and taught him in physical education at Hamilton Elementary School.

He said Karr graduated from Hamilton High School around 1983, and for a time was a substitute teacher at the elementary school. "He wasn't here very long, for about 15 days in August and September of 1996, and I had to remove him from the sub list," said Jackson. "There were some complaints from parents. I can't say more than that."

Karr moved to Northern California and taught at several schools. The Sonoma County district attorney's office said Karr had been arrested there in 2001 on several charges of possessing child pornography. He did not show up for a court appearance in December and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Wednesday evening, Nate Karr told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren that his brother, to his knowledge, did not know the Ramsey family, and did not have any contact with them.

Thai police: Man admits killing Ramsey

BANGKOK, Thailand - An American suspect arrested in Bangkok has admitted to killing 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, the head of Thailand immigration police said Thursday, a surprise breakthrough in a lurid, decade-old murder mystery that had cast a cloud of suspicion over her parents.

John Mark Karr, 41, admitted to the killing after he was arrested at his downtown Bangkok apartment Wednesday night, Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul told The Associated Press.

Suwat said Karr arrived in Bangkok on June 6 from Malaysia to look for a teaching job. It was not clear whether he got a teaching position, the police officer said.

A confession in Thailand isn't going to be enough to convict him in the US, but if they can get DNA evidence, that'll do it.

And getting an impartial jury is going to be almost impossible.

Another circus trial good for months of low brow entertainment!

CBS News correspondent Erin Moriarty, who covered the case for years and interviewed the Ramseys two years ago, says investigators were led to this suspect because of statements he allegedly made about the case.

An FBI source tells CBS News the leads in this case originated in the United States and went to the FBI in Bangkok, where the suspect's e-mail and phone conversations have been monitored since earlier this summer.

Investigators describe what the suspect talked about in his messages as "hair-raising - to see what he'd done, or contemplated doing to children."

The source calls those accounts "deadly frightening."

Investigators, says the source, knew the suspect was teaching at an international school somewhere in Thailand and that he had a lot of specific knowledge about the Jon Benet Ramsey crime scene.

This evolved into a joint investigation: the FBI, the Royal Thai police, the U.S. Embassy, and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency of the Department of Homeland Security.

According to the source, the content of the suspect's communications – that is, his e-mail and phone conversations concerning children - were very disturbing and led them to believe that children in Thailand were in imminent danger.

Investigators, said the source, felt their suspect was a sick guy and whether or not he was Jon Benet Ramsey's killer, were "really worried that we would end up with another dead child, or at least somebody badly sexually abused."

Nate Karr, brother of the suspect, says the arrest is a mistake, the accusations are "ridiculous, without a doubt," and the e-mail authorities found suspicious is related to a book his brother has been writing.

Yes this is the news of the century. No doubt Bush will welcome the spotlight being taken off of him for a while.

I for one, actually thought the mother did it in a twisted fit of jealousy. There were so many things about the case that made no sense.

But now that this guy has been caught, and various teachers are reporting their interactions with him, and him having his teaching license revoked, the child pornography, his obsession with the Utah kidnapping.. and his own brother not knowing if he was still married????? does give reasonable suspision I guess.

And like it or not, thailand has a bad reputation outside of thailand and a lot of men DO COME to thailand because of its reputation.

Hate to put a terrible spin on the case but what is to say that this Karr guy isn't just trying to get himself out of a very unpleasant Thailand jail... Most likely a pedophile... But this story gets him a one way ticket to legal defense heaven... Kind of a reverse rendition...
