Since Thailand is in Southeast Asia, it makes sense to send the top man regardless of what you think. After all why would they send the Assistant Secretary of state for African Affairs. ChiangraiTony
It appears that the USA officials are rightfully concerned with Thai/ China relations and want to stress the importance of Thai/ US relations. By showing Thailand their re-balancing of Asia plan, it appears that they will want to be sure Thai/ US has tied the knot and can rely on each other in a strategic way. Hope that Thailand doesn't try to burn the candle on both ends. It will be interesting to see how Thailand is positioned with both superpowers.
connda
Hopefully when he travels though Bangkok, the local BIB will stop his motorcade and offer to have him "pee in a cup" in public.Diplomatic immunity? Nevermind. "Pee in the cup" is only for the little people. "Pivot" is for the big dogs. Edited January 21, 2015 by connda

rickirs
"Russel will pay an official visit to Thailand on 26 January 2015 as part of a tour of South East Asian countries." This trip is no surprise. The USA Departments of State, Commerce, and AID will lead a business delegation to the Lower Mekong region meeting to highlight regional energy security and sustainability. The delegation will complement the Extraordinary Meeting of the Friends of the Lower Mekong (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, USA) together with Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Mekong River Commission, ASEAN Secretariat, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bankwith to discuss regional development strategies. There is no Chinese representation. Following the tour the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host the 7th Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) Regional Working Group (RWG) Meeting on 29-30 January 2015 in Bangkok. Hopefully, General Prayuth will stay away from the meeting so participants can focus on action plans for the benefit of all countries in Friends. Would the absence of PM Prayut to a meeting hosted by the Thai Government not be seen as an insult, as if "Friends of the Lower Mekong" is so unimportant as not to need the PM hosting the meeting being present? On the other hand with Thailand being a member of the 'Friends' doesn't that imply her being present all can focus on action plans for the benefit of all countries involved ? He's not the top man. That would be John Kerry, followed by deputy secretaries, under secretaries then assistant secretaries. However your point is taken, he's the guy that does this sort of regional work for the State dept and he's not a second rate flunky. He's also visiting Malaysia and Cambodia.
