CHAIYAPHUM: -- In a bid to revive a traditional Thai lifestyle, the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum instructed all schoolgirls to wear "sinh," a long tube skirt, and to refrain from wearing short skirts or pants on Buddhist holy days, starting from January 27.

"This will be the province's first such campaign since its establishment 193 years ago," said deputy provincial governor Napa Sakuntanak during the campaign launch yesterday.

All related parties would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this campaign on January 27, when the whole city would wear Thai traditional clothing and attend a parade around the city in the morning, she said.

This initiative would let neighbouring countries that will soon enter the Asean Economic Community (AEC) along with Thailand know that Chaiyaphum is the city of deep-rooted Thai culture, she added.

... In a separate article, it is reported that a revival of '70's American Youth is gathering impetus in Pattaya. Apparently the inaugural committee meeting was overheard in the Pink Panther Bar where a group of ageing inebriated American "former youths" were enquiring as to the availability of leathers, black T-shirts, hair trims of the popular "Brazilian" style, it was reported.

The Committee apparently also discussed the qualifications for women in their circle, as they evaluated the staff for curvature, bust size, and a uniquely American woody condition that develops from eating catkins from the Pussy Willow, particularly alongside riverbanks.

Another witness reported that the Committee adjourned every thirty minutes to [translation of Thai slang] "shoot a rabbit". On return to the Committee Room, each member took turns to sit on an ageing Harley Davidson motorcycle parked outside the Bar. The Committee members encircled the period vehicle whilst taking selfies of each other sitting on the motorcycle.

For others interested in joining this revival movement, the next meeting of the Inaugural Committee is scheduled at the same venue at approx 15:00 tomorrow.

Difficult to have traditions in America - such a young nation. Perhaps wearing traditional native American costumes would be appropriate, on commemoration days of massacres?

If it wasn't enough that I have to buy my daughter a different coloured uniform for every day of the week she goes to school, now parents (in Chayaphum at present but I won't be surprised if it spreads) will have to fork out for another one. Why do kids grow out of their clothes so quickly?

I think it's a neat idea. SE Asian women look great in traditional sinhs. Lao women look very feminine and attractive wearing the sinh, and in fact have to wear the sinh to be served in a bank, or pay a public utility bill at the office.

Because they look nice in it, it is okay to force women to wear it in order to be served at a bank or meet the whims of some public officials who think it is a wonderful idea? And you are okay with this?

This is 2015 isn't it?

Thailand has uniforms in schools. The kids will be wearing traditional garb a few days a year instead of tight skirts like tarts in a Bar. No big deal.

They should also be topless however, like Thai women in the Northeast before they became "Sivilai", and adopted foreign styles.
