Tubeless tires on laced rims...possible?

Featured Replies

If the spoke penetrations could be sealed,

would rim/bead seating & sealing be a problem?

Due to the number of spokes good luck getting them all sealed nice and tight

Seedy,

I guess that means yes.

Use an old rubber inner tube and lay inside the rim. I did it on my BMW and hasn't leaked once.

But seedys link works just the same

i think best is getting tubeless rims. a lot less risky and less time consuming if you stuck somewhere or need to push your bike.

Most thai mechs place two lines of thick electric plaster to spoke mounts and still it leaks air and you get some punctures over hard bumps.

Its your life you are risking here get a tubeless rim.

Why risk it.

Seal the spoke penetrations with a tube and you are on your merry way. smile.png

Personally if i had spoked wheel i'd run tyre/tube always, but a mate used silicon to seal the spoke heads.

Also he used slight abrasive paper on the inside rim where tyre sits .

He found it on this link.http://www.gadgetjq.com/tww.htm

Good luck. [He also has had no issues at all in many years.]

Thanks all.

The product I had in mind is Bituthane, a roofing membrane

ubiquitous in Colorado snow country as an underlayment.

It is waterproof even with nails penetrating.

Originally developed in WWII as a self sealing liner for aircraft fuel tanks subject to anti-aircraft fire.

Great stuff.

Viscoelastic.

~$1/sq. ft.

I feel this might be more reliable than the inner-tubes available here.

So sand-papering the rim @ tire interface will suffice?

I don't know why so many tubes lose so much air as they do. Because the tubeless tyre on the front of the PCX was penetrated by 2 nails at once a few mm apart I opted for a tube instead of plugs or just a vulcanised inner patch. After 6 months it hasn't lost one psi! I check it every month and the tubeless on the back always loses maybe 1 psi. Weird or a miracle!
