My partner (a Dutch national) has just turned 50 and has got her first retirement visa. We're not legally married but have been waiting for the necessary paperwork to come through for the past few months so that we can do so in Thailand. The last lot of paperwork got lost in the post and it's unlikely that the replacement set will arrive (from Netherlands) before my tourist visa expires early February. I'm a UK national.

My question is this:

What sort of visa do I need to acquire so that I can return to the country and then, once we are married, transfer it over to an extension based on being a dependent?

Is this possible if I return on a tourist visa?

Someone suggested getting a ED visa, but this doesn't appear to be very straight-forward at the moment.

I'll likely be going back to the UK to get the visa as I need to visit family.

Thanks in advance

You will need to get a tourist visa for the period till you get married. Once you are married you can apply fro a non-O visa at one of the neighboring countries. Immigration will not convert for reason of becoming a dependent of another foreigner, so you do not have another option.

Just an update to this post and another question.

I got a tourist visa while in the UK and we eventually got married in Thailand. My tourist visa will expire soon but I read on one of the other posts that it's possible to get it changed to a non-O in Bangkok (with two trips 15 days apart).

Is this an option for me or will I still need to leave the country to get a non-O based on being a dependent on my wife's retirement visa?

If I have to leave the country then which is the easiest place to get the non-O at (I live in Hua Hin). I've been to Penang before but just wondering if there's anywhere a little closer that doesn't involve 8 hours on a bus?

See my post #2.

No conversion for a dependent, it will be necessary to go abroad and apply in a neighbouring country for a non-O visa.
