Thai junta steps up security after Bangkok pipe bombs

AFP

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's junta vowed Monday to tighten security after two homemade pipe bombs detonated near a Bangkok shopping mall, the first major disruption to an uneasy peace imposed under martial law since last May's coup.

Authorities declined to speculate whether the small bombs -- which caused minor injuries to two passers-by when they exploded near the downtown Paragon mall on Sunday evening -- were linked to the nation's turbulent politics.

But deputy prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon warned the public will now face stepped up security.

"We will strictly enforce security across the country. We need to have high security checks in some areas," he told reporters.

"We can't say who is behind this... it could be people who have bad intentions, or are linked to politics or people who think differently," he added, without elaborating.

A team of forensic police on Monday sifted through the debris created by the blasts, which struck at around 8 pm (1300 GMT) on Sunday on a walkway leading to the busy Paragon shopping centre.

"They were pipe bombs... low pressure explosive devices," national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told reporters.

"They did not aim to cause major damage... they were used to create trouble," he added.

Thailand has been under martial law since the coup toppled the elected government last year, despite growing calls from rights groups and the international community for the junta to rescind the draconian law.

Political gatherings and criticism of the coup are forbidden under the law, with the junta responding aggressively to any form of protest.

Martial law also allows civilians to be tried in military courts, with verdicts not subject to appeal.

The Thai junta has repeatedly justified martial law by saying Thailand's bitter political divisions need more time to heal, while they set about remodelling the kingdom's political structure.

Thailand has endured nearly a decade of political turmoil since billionaire former premier Thaksin Shinawatra rattled the establishment by winning elections with his populist politics.

Parties led by Thaksin, his family or affiliates have won every election since 2001, in the process facing two coups and the disposal of three premiers by Thailand's interventionist courts.

Thaksin's younger sister Yingluck was toppled by a court shortly before the coup and was last month banned from politics by the junta-stacked National Legislative Assembly over a costly rice subsidy scheme.

She now faces criminal charges and a possible jail term linked to the populist policy.

Supporters of the Shinawatras have largely been silenced by martial law, and have not mobilised in defence of a toppled administration they elected in a 2011 election landslide.

PARAGON BOMB
Thai PM tightens security after mall bombs rattle Bangkok

Reuters, the Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha ordered security to be tightened in Bangkok on Monday after two small bombs rattled a luxury shopping mall and stoked tension in a city under martial law since a coup in May.

Two people were slightly hurt but the blasts caused little damage on Sunday evening. They were the first to shake the capital since the military seized power to end months of sometimes deadly street protests.

"I have ordered security to be tightened because this caseinvolves the well-being of the people," Prayuth told reporters.

He also condemned the blasts, saying they affected people and destroyed properties of people. He asked the public to help by reporting to authorities if they saw some suspicious people or activities.

There was no claim of responsibility for the blasts and police have not identified any suspects but Prayuth said he wasconfident the bombers would be found through CCTV footage of thearea.

Meanwhile junta spokesman Winthai Suwari said the motive for the Sunday blasts appeared to be to create panic rather than take lives, said.

The bombs were placed behind power transformers on a walkway linking an overhead rail line to the Siam Paragon mall, police said.

BANGKOK – Thailand’s military leader has ordered police to determine whether anti-government elements were behind the double bombing outside of a high-end shopping mall in Bangkok last night.

Junta chairman and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said at a press conference today that it is still too early to say whether the attack was politically-motivated, but that police are investigating people who are "opposed to the operations of the government.”

"We have to look at people who have spoken about using violence [recently]. We have to investigate whether there is any connection," Gen. Prayuth said. "I have instructed police to investigate this matter also, the people who said something about violence or opposing the operations of the government."

He continued, "This kind of matter is not about politics. It's about breaking the laws. Even though there may be difference in political opinion, violence is unacceptable, because it violates the laws. Everyone has to understand that politics and breaking the laws are separate. Don't give credit to people who break the laws."

Two homemade explosives went off on the walkway that connects Siam skytrain station and Siam Paragon shopping mall, one of the largest shopping complexes in Bangkok, at 8:10 pm last night.

Police initially reported that the explosions were caused by a malfunctioning electric transformer, but later clarified that two IEDs placed behind the tranformer were responsible for the blasts.

The site of this terrorist attack might be an indication of who and why

Unless I've got it wrong it was at the office of a BMA transport office - could possibly be something to do with "transport" issues - who knows

It would be pointless to carry out such an attack without someone claiming responsibility, could be that has happened already but not being shared with the public

Gun powder which is most likely the explosive used is (to me) seriously unregulated in Thailand with the various firework manufacturers darted all over the country and although not extremely powerful it can cause serious damage and even injury or death if assembled the right way.

Not to be ignored

Whatever the reasons are behind this, I hope I don't hear or see that happening again.

We had a short period of calm in this country, please, don't go back to your old habits.

But you promised me the violence had ended and everything was good. Nothing but rainbows and sunflowers in the future, eh?

you can never be sure - right ?

we are all well aware that there are elements in Thailand capable and highly motivated to orchestrate attacks like this

PM orders quick arrest of bomber
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Feb 2 -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered concerned authorities to quickly nail a bomber responsible for the explosion at the BTS Siam Skytrain station adjacent to the capital's Siam Paragon shopping centre last night.

He has not concluded it the incident was politically motivated.

Before leaving Bangkok for Nakhon Ratchasima province this morning, Gen Prayut said that the culprits would be arrested and he was confident that there was enough evidence to ensure that.

It remained unclear if the bombing was politically motivated; however, the prime minister said that political opponents had no right to violate laws.

Authorities would determine if parties which had threatened to use violence to oppose the government were connected with the explosion, Gen Prayut said.

He gave assurances that security measures would be intensified.

"I would like the public to watch out for signs of untoward incidents and condemn those responsible as they do not value the life and property of others," Gen Prayut said.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said that the bombing was apparently aimed at creating unrest, not at killing anyone, and security camera footage should lead to an arrest.

This morning the BTS Siam Square station operated as usual but was heavily guarded.

The bombed section was cordoned off. (MCOT online news)

Well, I passed by there a couple of times on Saturday and bought a BTS ticket at that machine you can see to the right in some of the photos. There was always a long line in front even though the sign said "Express". Maybe someone was unhappy with the service!

Anyone know what that office for anyway?

Unless this guy is an uneducated eight year old he could not have approved such an unorganized, barely coherent, press release. The translation could be the culprit and the translator may be called for an attitude adjustment.

More like the good General and/or his cronies set it up themselves as a means to signal to the outside world they will have to stay in power longer to "sort these elements out".

Yes, just like you people claimed the protestors were firing grenades into themselves to get sympathy.

Until the red-shirts got caught red-handed that is. Then you went quiet about that one - like so many other times.

Weng Tojirakarn, a Pheu Thai Party politician and leader of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), said he "can't be satisfied living under martial law and under the current provisional charter".

He added that he was particularly dissatisfied with Article 44 in the post-coup charter, which granted the junta absolute power to override all three branches of the state.

Military Logic:

We want to keep martial law.

The civilized world wants us to discontinue martial law and allow freedoms and keeps stating this.

How can we show the rest of the world that we are not yet able to lift martial law?
