Bird flu outbreaks help boost Thai chicken exports: Kasikorn think tank

BANGKOK, Feb 9 -- Thailand is expected to export more chicken this year following outbreaks of bird flu in several countries since late last year, according to a report issued by Kasikorn Research Centre.

The deadly disease has been found in a number of countries including China, Japan, the Netherlands, the US, Canada, Egypt and Nigeria.

Several countries have imposed import bans on chicken from certain producing countries, the report said.

The ban may help push Thailand’s exports of chicken and its products this year if the deadly disease does not occur here, while confidence in Thai chicken would be further boosted as South Korea will lift its ban and allow Thai chicken imports from mid-2015, the report said.

However, the current strengthening of the Thai baht, especially against the Japanese yen and the euro currencies could depress the country’s chicken exports as importers from those countries may bargain for lower export prices of chicken meat and processed chicken.

Kasikorn Research Centre forecasts that Thailand would earn about US$2.4 billion dollars from exportingf frozen and processed chicken in 2015, up 4.5 per cent from last year. (MCOT online news)

Of course the Think Tank of this almighty country didn't take in consideration that the bird flu may transfer to their own country, and that chicken exports may come to a stand still.

Should the birdflu be transferred here, they can always employ Thaksin to eat local chicken on TV...like he did before.

In typical Thai aloofness and self absorption, Thais could not consider the plight of this on other nations or people. Thais only view any event in the world whether joy or tragedy as an event that either benefits or hinders Thai economics. Thais have no concern for the well-being of any nation or people outside Thailand.

As I posted on another thread last time bird flu was detected here it was strenuously denied for a month then finally admitted.

The official who hid the information said he did so to protect poultry exports and note no concern that maybe diseased birds were being sold overseas..

Both he and the cabinet minister who had backed the denial survived, no suggestion of resigning, being asked to to go or being fired.

I suppose, after all, it was ' white lies ' for the benefit of the country and no thought of the international reaction and adverse publicity if diseased birds started arriving in other countries.

Do humans get sick from eating these infected birds ?

What a think tank.

It may boost exports on one hand but may not on the other.

Obviously a bit of a decisive bunch this lot.....
