Hi can any one recommend a care home for my american friend who has had a stroke ,paralyzed on one side and has dementia and has limited income plenty when he was ok but may be not enough for the care he now needs

Google "Cheshire homes", it is a chain of old age peoples homes in Thailand for farangs.

Remember driving past one in Cha-am, the day after I read about them. There are more of them though. I also know that there are a lot of old aged people homes in Thailand which are mainly or maybe exclusively catering for the German speaking market. Internet search in German yields a lot of results, not so useful for an American though.

The Cheshire Homes appear to be for the local, not foreign population.

In Chiang Mai, there is McKean Rehabilitation Centre which offers long-term nursing-home care. On the same grounds they have Dok Kaew, an assisted living center if the OP's friend is a little more independent. McKean used to be a leprosy care facility, but in recent years it has been re purposed into a nursing home and rehabilitation center.

Also, has the OP's American friend had a social work assessment to see if he's eligible for benefits that may have been overlooked perhaps from the VA and SSA? You don't have to be in the U.S. to claim some of these benefits.

But on that subject, returning to the U.S. may be a option. It's something that should be explored in a good social work assessment.

Costs usually range from 25 - 35 K/month with shared rooms being less expensive than private. These are all-inclusive costs i.e. meals etc as well as nursing care.

wherever he goes, it will be important that he have friends or family regularly visit to keep an eye on things and be sure he is properly cared for.

Sounds like he was working until recently? As he is now disabled, he is eligible for SS Disability in the US (provided he was paying SS taxes) and can collect that in Thailand. However the application process will be a bit complicated given his dementia. It can be done online but has to be done by him or someone with Power of Attorney.

I suggest you track down whatever family he has back in the US and see if you can get them to look into this, starting with a call to the SS Administration to find out if he is eligible for disability and, if he is, to find out what the process is for someone to apply on his behalf, assuming he is incapable of applying on his own behalf.

If he is over 62 years of age then he may be eligible for regular Social Security, in fact would probably already have been getting it. Whiel eligibility for SS disability requires that he have been paying into the SS system recently, for regular SS that is nto the case as long as he worked in the US earlier in life for a reasonable time.

actually, this is my line of work in US geri rehab, medicare would cover only 'skilled' bed for 100 days, if needs rehab or has a wound or RN need, no maintainence housing.

re: "benefits" the medicaid program varies state to state, but generally one must have < $1100 of income / month and < $2000 in the bank , in order to get 'care home' coverage via medicaid, or if possible one "spends down" at the $5000/month rate for a 'carehome' or whatever it is $10k/month for a SNF/facility bed.

course, might be able to private hire someone at $15-20 under the table, depends on how many hours are needed, in which case adult day health is cheaper, etc .......
